The road to success is paved
with many bumps
The road to an
unprecedented 11th district
championship is guarded by
seven hostile camps The fifth
of these were made believers
Friday night, hut not without
leaving their impression
For the record, the G-P
Wildcats powered past the
Tuioso-Midwsy Warriors 21 to
7, and to the thousands of loyai
Ians and hundreds of ex
Wildcats it was a grand and
glorious victory But. it was not
a one-sided game dominated
entirely by the victors The
Warriors put up quite a battle,
especially in the second half
when they fought the Cats to a
standstill.
The game produced big plays
and long runs, but probably the
victory should go to the men in
the trenches That is, the
defensive line and the offensive
line. The offensive line knocked
holes in the Warrior defense m
the opening phase of the game
that the proverbial Mack truck
could be driven through And
the defensive line not only
sacked the Warrior passer
three times but they contained
Phil Hobbs effectively all
night Hobbs was the leading
ground gainer for the
Warriors, but most of his
yardage was short with only
one being for as much as 10
yards
The fate of the game was
sewed up in the opening
minutes when the Cats stunned
the Warriors with their
slashing blocking that released
y Co

the second <kive and 44 in the
Rocky Collette for a 74-yard
ibie for the first TD. 16 in
12 33 Kingsville won with 66
points ar.d the Cats were fourth
with 140

third Literally before the
Warriors could get their
armour up they were blown out
of the game with three quick
TDs When they finally did
recover theu poise in the
second half it was too late
The game was just seconds
old when big Rocky Collette hit
the middle of the Warrior line
with all of his power He
earned for a few steps on his
own and then the wave of G-P
blockers made the Warrior
secondary look like it had been
hit by fire from a Browning
automaUc rifle Colllette didn't
pause to count the corpses, and
despite the vain effort of some
of the defenders who
recovered, he won the 74-yard
foot race to the promised land
Marty Foas kicked true and the
Wildcat fans smelled victory
with hardly a m*nute gone in
the game
G-P's defense came out with
fire in their eyes, determined
to get a piece of the glory They
did. and the Warriors punted
without getting their initial
first down
Glenn Burdine. on a keeper,
followed a wave of Mockers for
14 yards and then Collette
ripped for another 16 and a first
down into Warrior Territory It
looked like nothing could atop
the Cata aa they moved quickly
to aend Kenny Meyers knifing
over the left aide for II yarda
and the second score Fans
made it 14 to 0 The Warriors
had that "What Hit Me Look
aa they looked at the
scoreboard
Again, the defense was at
their beat with Mike Rivers
providing one of the key stops
that turned the next T-M
offensive drive into a disaster
The Cata took over on their
own 20-yard line Eight yards?
Nothing to it. Again the

Finally HoOt* and Company
were able lo pick up a first

near midfield Facing still
another first down and short
yardage, the T-M coach elected
to try agin rather than punt but
this time Joe Garza broke
through to sack the
quarterback on a pass attempt
for • yarda
G-P came out with their
razzie dazzle A flea flicker
pass sailed deep into Warrior
territory headed for Darren
James The hall was juggled
for a second, went free and into
the hands of a Warrior
defender
The loss of the hall seemed to
ire G-P defenders Roland
Salinas broke through to sack
quarterback Alvaro Vi 11aIon

Gilbert Ramirez dropped
Hobbs for a loss of 2. Ronnie
Miller held the next thrust for a
scant I yard, forcing a punt
G-P was forced to punt on
their take over as the Warrior
defense began to get tough
The Warriors picked up a
first down on a pass completion
but then Villalon was sacked
again on a third down play A
bad snap on a pur.t gave G-P
the ball on the Warrior 16-yard
line
Burdine completed hia first
pass to move the ball inside the
T-M 5-yard line for a first down
but on the next play the Cata
lost the ball on a fumble on the
1 foot line The Warriors ran
out the clock to end the half
Without a doubt a charged
Warrior team came back to
start the second half They took
the ball on their own 14 and
drove it down the field with
hard hitting runs combined
with a couple of pass
completions With a first down
on the Cat 14-yard line Villalon
completed a pass to Preston
Johnstone for 10 yards but
when he was hit the hall flew
free and Bryan Ray recovered
on the 7-yard line for the Cats

turned and passed back to his
right to John Starnes for 10
yards and the TD Robert
Rosales, kicking for Preston
Johnstone who had been hurt,
drove the ball through the
uprights to make the score 21 7
Line play was getting intense

P 6 yard line Hobbs forced the
ball to the 4-yard line on two
hard running drives Then
Tommy Robison turned in one
of the big plays of the game
when he brushed aside Warrior
Mocker* and nabbed Villalon
by the jersey and spun him to
the ground for a 9-yard lass A
fourth down pass fell
incomplete and a relieved
hunch of Cats took over on first
down on their own 13-yard line
The Warriors battled to
contain the G-P boys and take
over, finally forcing a short
punt The Warrior*, fighting
the clock now, took over and
went to the air The hall was hit
by a G-P defender but before it
could settle to the ground as
incomplete. Steve Hodge came
up with the interception
With time in the game
