PANHANDLE INVADED
BY PEDDLERS
The annual invasion of pedd-
lers an(d “easy )mbney” .slick-
tongue salesmen and agents on
the Panhandle “front” is here.
Wlith the approach of the bounti-
ful harvest season with m'cjney
in the pockets of our people, there
is always an influx of out-of-the
country peddlers and agents when
financial conditions are good. The
writing of this warning was pro-
mpted by a suggestion of a good
of Perryton. Quoting him: “I
friend farmer living northwest
haven’t time to he bothered with
salesmen and agents at this time
salesmen and agents at thie time.
If I need anything I can go to my
home merchant and get it and I
knoAv that he will stand back of
his product. I have also found
that many of these peddlers are
not loyal to the United States as
they should be and I am wonder-
ing if some of them are not agents
of those forces that are seeking
to destroy the United States gov-
ernment from within ”

One reason why America has a
farm problem is that too much
land that should never have been
farmed has been put into cultiva-
tion and too much land has been
farmed under practices that mine
the soil of its fertility.
As a result, about 50 million
acres of American farm land are
n|ow worthless, and another 50
million acres border on abandon-
ment.
Conservation of (the Nation’s
soil resources is one of the first
step in solving the farm problem.

The state soil and water con-
servation district law gives farm-
ers and ranchers a tool whereby
they can cooperate to speed up

of theAAA program is to encour-
age use of practices which build
fertility and prevent erosion.

FEARED THE WORST
A typographer had been pre-
sented with a flask of rare old
Scotch whiskey. He was walking
'briskly along the road toward his
home, when along came a car
which he did not sidestep quite
in time. It threw him down and
hurt him badly. He got up and
limped down the road. Suddenly
he noticed that something warm
and wet was trickling down his
leg. “Oh, Lord,” he groaned, “I
hope that’s blood!”
