GOOD VS POOR BEEF
Low Trices no Excuse for Producing Moat
of Luw Urado
It crrtamly would not be much out of
tlo wu to say that there is a wider ranjre
Id the quality of beef cattle and dressed
href n w offered for sale than ever before
in our history It is undeniable that
great improvement has been raado in
beef production during the past few
vers The art of breeding and feeding
La3 rem bed a satisfactory stage of de-
velopment to those who avail themselves
of it the trouble lies in the fact that in-
telligent practitioners of the art are too
few I lure can be found now in any
firstclass market some of the best spec-
imens of Leel carcases the world ever
saw wile one does not have to search
far to tiud as poor if not the poorest
that 1 rds or stables ever turned out
Tee eMremely poor however is prob
allv ouiv ut parcutly so it is the contrast
wall th < choice article that emphasizes
thu Inferiority
This marked difference in the quality
of btvf would undoubtedly be a revela-
tion to many farmers if they could see
it It 4s as marked as the difference
litwien tbp best and poorest quality of
widn goods for instance found on
thdr merchants shelves There is this
djsttnuon however The maker of
the iu > riit woolen goods may make us
large a percentage as he who makes the
tSt while the maker of the poorest
but probably pays as much for its mun
ufauure as ho who makes the best
Tliu c usideration shows the importance
of maKing high class beef shows in
fa < t the absolute necessity of it Low
rncud beef should be no justification for
making poor beef Ecouomy lies in the
theap st possible production in relation
to prue and that is found in making
the le3t beef for it costs but little if
any more than the poorest quality

Virginia Dressed Beef Law
The bill recently passed by the Virginia
legislature providiug for the inspection
of all dressed meats sold in that state
killed over one hundred miles from the
place where offered for sale has been
approved by Governor McKinney and
went into effect on the 17th ult This
legislation is aimed at Western beef
especially that shipped there from
Chicago Huudreds of thousands of
pounds of this meat is disposed of there
and it is claimed that it has greatly crip
plod the raising of bepf cattle In Virginia
The law provides for the appointment by
judges of the corporation courts in tho
cities nnd county court judges in the
counties of an inspector of dressed meats
These officers are to be paid a tee of 1
cent for each pound ot beef inspected
It is thought that Armour Co and
other large houses will inspect the valid-
ity of this law before the courts
The Wyoming Quarantine
As the time for the movement north of
southern cattle approaches the prospects
of a large number coming increases It
looks now as if there would be over 100
000 moved by rail The shipments will
begin in May and continue until about
August All southern cattle to be un-
loaded in Wyoming will be required to
unload In Cheyenne for inspection To
accommodate the larjre number expected
Mr R S Van Tassell is enlarging the
stockyards putting in new chutes and
building more pens There will be ca-
pacity for G00O head at one time The
yards are amply supplied with pure water
and there will be tho best of feed The
accommodations in short will be first
class in every respect and shippers will
bo fairly dealt with Northwestern

There is big money in it
The dressed meat men having given
notice that they would advance the prico
of dressed beef it is not unreasonable to
expect that the prices of beef on foot
