can't see to land. I really love it even if I do gripe about it.
My Instructor--I really can't make up my mind just what to expect.
The second day he asked me to get him a coke. Yesterday he says:
"VanScyoc will you volunteer to get me a cup of coffee & a doughnut"?
We have orders not to leave the flight line without reporting out, so
I says: "Yes Sir, shall I report out"? He looked at me a moment as
though he was trying to make up his mind if I were half bright &
says: "Use your own judgment". So I got the coffee & doughnut and I
sneaked out. Today he says, "will see you all Monday", and me, I
never think, says okay. I'm practically out the door & he yells "who
said okay"? I stopped dead in my tracks & looked around & said, "I
did sir". He looked at me & says, "You're supposed to say Yes Sir".
And I said, "Yes Sir".
June 5, 1944 - Monday
You should have seen the storm here this evening. We just got off
the flight line when the dust really began to blow. Clouds down to
about 300 feet or less & dust up to the clouds. At's and Bt's coming
in with their wheels practically dragging the roof tops. Ambulances
lined up on edge of field. Some excitement!! Some times the girls
have to help hold planes down but we didn't this time. They all
finally got in without mishap as far as I know.
I can mark oftF another day! Have 04:26 hours now on Lhe PL's. I
feel better tonight as my instructor said I did much better today.
That is, my coordination was better. We did stalls & spins (and do
those Pt's ever spin). When we got through he said okay, do gliding
turns down to 2000 feet indicated & take me home. I said, "Yes
Sir". I got down to 2900 feet indicated & leveled off & he says,
"What's the matter"? So I yelled (he couldn't hear me anyway) "do
you want to go 400 feet under"? He laughed and said, "I just
wondered what you would do". Some joke huh? He confided his age
today, he'll be 22 next month. He has half gray hair but acts 22 so
I now see why & can make some allowances that I couldn't have other-
wise.
Had a quiz in Math today. Don't know how I came out but think I got
them nearly all. Have a quiz in Theory of Flight tomorrow. I know
absolutely nothing about it so I'll probably flunk it and have to
spend all my evenings in Study Hall. Tonight will be great for
sleeping. The wind shifted 180 degrees and is now from the north.
Very cool & raining gently. Got to get my hair cut. 8 demerits if
your hair isn't one inch off the collars. That means confined to
Post for weekend too. Its 21:20 now so got to get on the books. We
do S turns tomorrow. Must read about them.
