SUDDEN DEATH
We all believe in safety, and
there is probably not one of us
who does not appreciate the value
of life. We talk about Safety on
the highways and we firmly be-
lieve that we should practice Saf-
ety. But do we?
Do we really and truly think,
talk and act Safety? In this days
of fast automobiles and mounting
traffic deaths, new demands are
placed upon us. Demands -which
require us to think beyond our-
selves. We must think for the
other person. We must think for
that child playing along-the high-
way or crossing the street.
Recently, the seriousness of ac-
cidents along the highways Was
brought very forcibly to my at-
tention in a statement when it
was said: “It is startling to re-
alize that during the past eigh-
teen months there were more peo-
ple killed in traffic accidents in
the United States than there
were soldiers killed in the World
War. We, as individuals, should
think, talk and act Safety in the
homes, as well as on the high-
ways. ’ ’

1 The 1939 Ford V-8 is a beautiful, modem
motor car. Its 85-horsepower engine gives
you economical, well-balanced performance
over the entire speed range — and the 60-
horsepower engine is even more economical.
2 The structural strength of the Ford car —
frame, bracing, axles, body — makes not only
for safety, but durability and long life.
3 Ford hydraulic brakes are exceptionally
large and strong in proportion to car weight.
4 The Ford car is stabilized for comfortable
riding. Its springbase, the distance between
front and rear suspension, is 123 inches. Seats
are toward the center, perfectly balanced. The
ear does not bob or dip and can have very
little sway.
• • •
These four points — power, strength, safety,
comfort — are by far the most important
essentials in any motor car. They form the
basic value of your investment.
With this solid foundation to build on, the
Ford V-8 has been made beautiful, spacious,
easy to drive. It is richly upholstered and has
all the modern features which add to the lux-
ury and pleasure of motoring.
You can see these things when you take a
trial drive, hut do not forget that the main
value is in the things you do ndt readily see —
quality of materials, precision of manufacture,
fundamental engineering.

The rats are greatly attracted to

NEW GRASS
If your yard! is small and you
have new grass, and you still
must hang your clothes out there,
do this to prevent trampling it.
Buy pulleys and thread clothes-
line through these. You can stand
on the steps and hang out the
wash by pushing the line out in-
to the yard.
Don’t use furniture polishes,
oils or varnishes on upholstery
leather. This will make it sticky
cleaning, use a damp cloth and a
small amount of castile soap.
Rinse with another damp cloth
and dry with clean cloth. Polish
by rubbing quickly.
REVERSE SHADES:
When window shades are soil- j
ed and shabby, take down and j
remove shade from roller. Make I
hem in upper end and tack low- j
er, worn end' to pole. The soiled
part will be up under the roller
unless you pull your shade all i
the wiay down, which is rarely
done.
INSPIRATIONAL

WHY GO TO COLLEGE?
This is a question that has been
argued for lo these many years.
The question like all of its type
is no nearer solution today than
it was in the early days of Am-
erican Colleges. You can still
hear fathers saying such outmod-
ed phrases as the following, “I
'ain’t going to send my boy to
college. They don’t give them
nothing but book learning. I want
him to get something practical.
I don’t see no sense in book
learning; I didn’t have none and
I guess I’m doing alright.” For
his daughter he will say, “There
ain’t no point in getting her head
all filled Avith that foolishness,
it’ll keep her from being a good
wife to some man.” That man
fails to understand the value of
modern education. It is in the
face of such sentiment that the
'educational institutions of Texas
have had to march. Can they be
blamed then if their growth has
been to a certain extent slower
than in other states?
It would be unwise to send
every child in Texas to college.
The outcome of such a plan Avould
be to flood the market Avith col-
lege graduates, or to cause a
great deal of heartaches to stud-
ents Avho, lacking the ability to
graduate, failed out. It is far
better not to send a student to
college who is AVTeak in school.
This has a. more telling effect on
his character than if he does not
go. Business colleges provide an
excellent opportunity for students
Avho do not desire the purly cul-
tural fields, but Avho are adept
at the practical side of life.
The matter of picking a career
is an unfortunate feature of our
system. Many parents make the
mistake of deciding Avhat little
Mortimer will be Avhen he is cut-
ting his first teeth. In spite of
the development of all his talents
in a field other than the one
Which they had chosen, they sent
him to college when he reached
the proper age to study in the
chosen field. He does poorly in
his work. They send him letters
scolding him for not taking ad-
vantage of the splendid oppor-
tunity that they are giving him.
Do you call it an opportunity to
take castor oil? Perhaps the sub-
jeet that they have chosen for
him is that distasteful to M<r/
timer. Mortimer becomes disgust-
ed with their attitude. Someone
tells him to change his subjects
to the field he Avants without
telling his parents. Mortimer tries
and fiets so far along in this neAV
field that he is forced to go back
to the field that his parents had
chosen, he would lose many hours
of work. He is alloud to continue
in his neAVi field. The symathetie
understanding betAveen parents
and child are forever shaken by
this misunderstanding. Let the
child pick the field that he wants.
Only a happy worker can be a
satisfied and prosperous worker.
