REAL THANKSGIVING
When we think of Thanksgiv-
ing Day we associate it with a
big turkey strutting about the
farm yard, or perhaps we are re-
minded of the steaming, delect-
able portions a la cranberry
sauce brought from the kitchen.
In any event, the ideas of service
in giving and gratitude in receiv-
ing are uppermost, although they
may be brought to the attention
by the performance of customary
rites long associated with this
public holiday.
It is dutiful to give thanks for
what we have received. Rut it is
more ennobling to the spirit to be
grateful for what we are able to
give. A prayer uttered because
one has been blessed with good
health or good fortune fails of its
completeness unless with it goes
thanks for being thereby able to
help one’s self to better circum-
stances and to help others. Even
good health and great wealth, the
two most cherished of material
possessions, are but means, not
ends. They are the starting point
enable us to accomplish,
a real Thanksgiving.
This is
GIVE THE HOME MERCHANT
FIRST CHANCE
Sometimes it happens that the
man who, in social life would fell
badly for having committed a
social blunder against his busi-
ness friend, feels little or no com-
punction in turning dowTn the
same man in a business deal even
where no odds exist. Give the
home merchant the first chance to
bid for your purchase. A safe
rule is, if the home merchant
hasn’t got it, he will order it for
you. Give him something to
work for, and he will take pride
not only in duplicating hut in bet-
tering the price of the foreign
trader.
Remember this while you are
doing your Christmas shopping
this year. If you desire some
special gift, and the mer-
chant does not have it, he will
take a delight in getting it for
you without extra expense.
Give thanks for that you have,
of real service. What good is a j and then add a postscript giving
robuM specimen of quarterback or [utmost thanks for a lot of things
tackle unless he can get into the [you don’t have to have,
game and help his team to win ? \
Such man would actually suffer
if kept out. What benefit to him-
self or to mankind is the clipper
of interest coupns or the drawer
of wage unless the wealth gained
is put into legitimate circulation
and beneficial service?
Tl ankful? Yes. We are thank-
ful for the good conditions that
have been showered upon us and
for all the benefits we have re-
ceived; but we are also thankful
for all that these things have
made possible for us to do, and
for the good works that they will

If You Want to
Look Like This
—Don’t
You are going to be disappointed
when you look at the face in this
Advertisement. It will be such
a shock from the type of Faces
you always see in Advertisements.
They generally get some Guys
face to use in a Collar or Un-
derwear Ad that looks like he
was just born for that Ad. You
never see him in real life or any-
thing that ever looked like him.
These “Bull” Durham people
conceived the idea of something
new. They felt that you were
tired looking at such handsome
faces in Ads, it was so discour-
aging to men who looked at them
because they knew they could
never look like these fellows
themselves. So they wanted a
homely face that would be an
inspiration to other homely men,
(because there is a terrible lot of
hard looking Birds among you
readers). So after looking the
World over they picked on me.
I dont smoke “Bull” Durham,
so the Moral is IF YOU WILL
SMOKE IT, YOU WILL
NEVER LOOK LIKE ME.
I am the horrible example of a
man not using it.
P. S. There is going to be another
piece in this paper soon. Look for it.

Health Talk By

It is just as serious to be too
fat as to be too thin. That does
not mean that if you are two, five
or perhaps even ten or more
pounds above your normal weight
that you should try to reduce.
Not at all! It is a fine thing to
be a little above weight, far bet-
ter than to be just on your normal
line. The number of 'pounds you
can get above your normal, and
still be considered normal is a
matter or proportion. A tall per-
son might be 20 pounds over-
weight and still be healthy, while
if a six year old child were that
much above average, it would be
something to investigate.
Twenty per cent overweight is
as far as one can usually get witli-
4. Plenty of green vegetables,
prepared without butter.
5. Plenty of fruit; substitute it
for pudding, cakes and pies.
6. Lean meat may be taken in
moderation.
7. Drink plenty of water. It
will help to keep you from think-
ing you are hungry.
8. Don’t eliminate the milk,
although you may decrease the
amount, giving the child a pint a
day and the adult one half pint.
Milk contains elements necessary
for the body.
9. Get plenty of fresh air and
exercise. A brisk walk of a coup-
le of miles or more is good exer-
cise. But when you get home,
don’t eat any more than you oth-
erwise would have or exercising
will not make you reduce.
The first historical mention of
a balloon is a record of an aero-
stat carrying several persons that

mal. To get the percentage, di-
vide the number of pounds the
person is above normal by his nor-
mal weight.
Four extra inches in the waist
line, and 25 pounds of excess fat
reduces the number of years a
man can expect to live by 40 per
cent. It may well be said that a
man’s waist line is his life line!
Remember it is excess fat that
is dangerous. Extra weight due
to good muscle development is to
be commended.
If you are too fat, it is quite
possible to reduce. The most im-
portant point about reducing is to
keep at it, day in and day out and
month after month. You cannot
lose flesh by dieting one day and
eating everything you want the
next. After you have reduced as
far as you care to, you will have
to watch your diet for some
months to keep from immediately
gainng it all back.
Don’t try to reduce to quickly.
It puts a strain on your body to
lose weight too rapidly. A pound
a week is enough to lose. If you
are greatly overweight it is all
rght to lose 2 pounds a week.
The idea in reducing is to eat
just a little less than'your body
needs in this way your force your
body to use up a little force of
its fat. Since some foods make
you fat more quickly than others,
these are the ones to eliminate, or
at least decrease. It is not a
good plan to go without any of
your regular meals; merely eat
less at each meal.
Here are some definite rules:
1. Avoid fat and dishes contain-
ing fat. Eliminae butter and also
cream almost entirely| Nothing
will make you fat faster than fat.
2. Use sugar sparingly. Avoid
confections and rich desserts.
3. Eat only small quantities of
potatoes, bread, cereals and other
starchy foods. Use the coarser
cereals and breads.

Syndication of much of the gen-
