From the Texas Wesleyan Banner.

Sunday School Union.
The above meeting was held in the Presby-
terian church, Sunday evening. The intro-
ductory services of reading the Scriptures,
singing and prayer was conducted bv Rev.
L. S. Gibson of the Presbyterian church.
In addition to the address of the agent. Mr.
James Burk, a few brief and interesting re-
marks were made by Peter W. Gray and
Thomas Harrison, Esqs.—the former connect-
ed with the Episcopal—the latter with the
Baptist Church.
We are pleased to learn that a liberal con-
tribution vyas made to extend the operations

A stranger in Kentucky dropped into a
coffee-house there, one morning, and was sur-
prized to find, laying on the floor, a number of
human eyes which the barkeeper, with all the
sang froid imaginable, was sweeping out.
On enquiring how it was, this very cavalier
rejoinder came from the sweeper—“Oh ! it’s
only the remains of a gouging match, had last
night ! That’s Ned Duncan’s eye,” as he
trod on a grey one; “and that red one is Bill
Smith’s I know it, as Bill gulps down the
Ted eye in awful quantities.”___
The Mayor and cXXcrf of Baltimore are
still at lofoerheads in relation to theii action
on the Mcfjcmogh will. The Council passed
an ordinp.nce appointing agents under the will;
the Mayor vetoed it, because, as in such cases,
he did not nominate them.
“General Smith, one of the executors, wri-
ting to the Mayor from this city, says that the
value of the estate of Mr. McDonogh has
been greatly overrated, and from the best in-
formation he can obtain, it does not exceed
three millions. This is shown by the docu-
ments now in possession of the executors.”
Wreck.—A despatch dated the 30th uit.
says;
The ship Osipee, from New Orleans, for
Boston, went ashore, in Provincetown harbor,
and is a complete wreck. The crew were all
saved.
English Commerce.—According to the
last Parliamentary returns, made in 1848. the
number 0! steamboats in the United Kingdom,
is 1100, with an aggregate tonnage of 255,371,
and an aggregate horse power of 92.862. If
it were placed abreast, they would reach three
and a half miles, and stem to stem they would
reach twenty-three and a half miles. The
number of steamboats upon the waters of the
valley of the Mississippi alone is at the pres-
ent time over 1400. The entire value ol the
vessels belonging to the mercantile marine of
the British Empire is about $190,000,000; and
the value of the articles they annually trans-
port to and from the shores of the kingdom is
about $500,000,000. Full one-fourth of the
entire commerce of the country is carried on
at London.
The following gentlemen have been elect-
ed by the Legislature to represent South
Carolina in the" Southern Congress, viz: R.
W. Barnwell, J. P. Richardson, W. Hamp-
ton, and L. Cheves.
The design of Austria and her supporters
is sufficiently evident in the incautious declar-
ation of Schwarzenburg. This indiscreet
prime minister exclaimed,- in conversation,
“We have crushed Italian liberalism in the
person of Charles Albert, and we. must now
crush Germany liberalism in the the person of
Frederick William.” Such were the very
•words made use of by the Austrian minister,
and which produced the summons of the Prus-
sian landwehr.
"'Reforms in Indiana.—On the 17th, in the
Indiana Convention, a section was moved and
adopted—ayes 70. noes 57—rendering ineligi-
ble for the Legislature, any president, director,
officer or agent of anv banking, railroad or
moneyed coporation, for six months after they
have held such office. A resolution by Mr.
Chapman, that embezzlement of public funds
should be punished as felony, was adopted.

ft RAPE VINES,—The Undersigned has
VJT several hundred plants of the best varieties
of native grapes, which are fair superior to any
imported vines. The foreign grapes cannot be
cultivated here successfully. They all perish in
a few years, and bear little fruit. These native
grapes are equal in flavor to the best foreign
grapes, and being natives are perfectly hardy.—
The undersigned will remain in Galveston a tew
days, and will dispose of a few of his vines to
those who mav desire them. He is anxious to
have them tried, and will therefore dispose of
them at the lowest prices. T. B. MATRAT.
