Man was not Made to Mourn.
^ world’s not all a wretched, worthless waste—
1 all a barren desert, lone and wild,
iere man, ’mid toils and troubles plac'd,
tres pXentto distress, of misery a child.
iere are bright spots, where nature lavish hand
ath scattered sweets and bounteously given
he fruits, that blushing, bend them to the hand—
There dew drops sparkle in the light of Heaveu.
Mankind’s not all deceptive and debased;
)*r better nature frequently prevails.
jVe’re not all fiends in human forms encased;
ind there are honest hearts vice ne’er assails.
And there are lovely women, in whose smile
The force of innocence and beauty sweeps
Sadness from the troubled bosom, while
Sternness melts subdued, if woman weeps.
The fragrant fruits of earth, the fiow’ry dell
The smiling sky and seasons as they turn ;
These with woman’s cheering influence, tell
Man he was not made to mourn.
The Machine.
“Hip ! Hip ! Hurrah !”—Originally a war-
cry adopted by storm'ers of a German town
wherein a great many Jews had taken rei-
uge. The place being sacked, they were all
put to the sword, under the shouts of Hiero-
solyma est perdita. From the first letter ot
those words (h, e, p.) an exclamation was
contrived. We little think, when the wine
sparkles in the cup and soul-stirring toasts are
applauded by our "Hip, hip, hurrah !” that
we record the fall ol Jerusalem, and the cru-
elty of Christians against the chosen people of
God.
A citizen of Norwalk, Ct.,has invented and
is about to take out a patent for a moveable
pad for the head to rest upon while riding in
railroad cars. It can be carried by an person
and may be attached to the back of any 'rail-
road ear seat, and graduated to the height or
position of the head.
l£ Isn’t it strange,” asked a friend the other
day, “ that Sir Isaac Newton should ever
have indulged in a clownish freak?” When
did he ?” we inquired. “ Why, when he was
dividing the rays of light, to be sure, for wasn’t
that cutting- up shines?”
“ What is love, Kate ?” said a young man
to his bright particular, the other night.
“Love/Joel, well I declare I don’t know-
unless it is getting married and kissing little
babies.”
Joel fainted.
Say, dearest Anna, why so gravel
I said you had no soul, ’tis true ;
For what you are, you cannot have—
’Tis 1 have one, since I first had you.

Matches are made in Heaven. Yes, was'j
the reply, and they are sometimes dipped in
the other place.
We learn by the paper published at Hen-
derson, that the small pox is prevailing in the
eastern part qjf that (Rusk) county. But a
single death lmd occurred, and efforts were
making to confine the disease to the neighbor-
hood in which it first appeared. Some cases
of fee same disease, it is said, have lately oc-
curs! in Houston county.
I purchased, (says a Californian.) six hens
ofanlndian woman, for six dollars, and a
roosttr for fifty cents. On asking the woman
why fee charged only half-price for the roos-
ter, sis replied that the fellow laid no eggs,
and asfor his crowing, that did nobody any
good.
Hov,’pleasant it is for a father to sit at his
son’s bard. It is like the aged man reclining
under tie shadow ol’ the oak which he has
planted.
Two f the convicts, Smith and Higgins,
that esooed from the Alabama penitentiary,

itentiary They were caught in the barn-
loft of Cl. Abel Haggerty’s, five miles from
Wetumk, on Monday night, the 30th lilt,,
by a code of Tennessee horse-drovers.
