AN EMBODIED TRUTH
Committee, Rep. Luther Johnson
of Texas asked him why he had
left a $150,000-a-year position in
private industry in order to ac-
cept his post in the Defense Com-
mission with no salary at all.
“I don’t want to sound senti-
mental,” Mr. Knudsen replied,
“but I had been working in this
country for more than forty
years. It had: been pretty good to
me. I was in a position to work
for nothing, and I felt that if I
could do something for the coun-
try, I would like to do it. That’s
all.”
The audience and the commit-
tee, including members on both
sides, broke into applause. Mr.
Knudsen’s face reddened and he
appeared quite embarrased.
The applause was not merely
for Mr. Knudsen or for his simple
and direct statement of the plain
truth. It was for something big-
ger than that. It Avas for what Mr.
Knudsen embodies in his person.
For he is a living example of one
of the fundamental things that
democracy in America means. He
came to this country from Den-
mark a penniless youth and dur-
ing the more than forty years he
Avorked here he advanced to be-
come one of the nation’s leading
industrialists.
In his inaugural address Presi-
dent Roosevelt said: “'America
has been the NeAV World in all
tongues, to all peoples, not be-
cause this continent Avas a new7
found land, but because all those
Avho came here believed they
could create upon this continent
a neAV life—a life that should be
neAV in freedom.”
It is this truth that William S.
Knudsen embodies and that AAras
spontaneously applauded in that
committee room at Washington
Beauty With Age
When selecting furniture which
you want to last, genuine mahogany

it becomes more exquisite, more

Nabs Skunk by Tail
Mrs. Ted Fraser of Elm Creek,
Neb., can sympathize with the man
who got the bear by the tail. When
she caught a skunk in her chicken
house, knowing a skunk cannot func-
tion as such when his tail is held
captive, she grabbed him by it,
swung him boldly aloft and started '
in search of her husband. She
couldn’t find him. Realizing what
would happen if she let go, she shift-
ed him hand to hand until her arms
tired. Finally finding a length of
bailing wire, she twisted it around
the skunk’s tail, suspended him
from a fence, got a gun and shot
him.
