a food storage and the steps that
might be taken to avert it. x *

Lucy Stewart was elected to £ave •'
charge of the meetting.
Along this line it is not amis
to discuss this subjeet briefly be-
cause the American Nation is
squarely facing the greatest prob-
lem in years.
The heavy drain on meat and
grain supply in order to feed the
European armies has created an
actual shortage of thoae supplies.
The probable American army of
1,000,000 men will place a heavier
drain upon the valuable er6p and
this brings us face to face with
an actual food shortage.
Only one thing can remedy the
ease and that is for every one
to become'wproducer if only to a
limited extent. Home gardens,
chickens, milch cows, and pigs are
the only things that can actually
aave us from dire want. Riotous
living America had as well face
about and put on the damper.

One of the very best programs
of I he year was given at the open
meeting of the Study Club last
Thursday hs “Better Baby Week”
was in progress and as the Study
Club was the sponsor for Baby
Week, the program was in accord-
ance.
The leader for the lesson was
Mrs. Chas. Ory. The response to
roll call was “Items About Better
Babies,” and many and interest-
ing bits of information were given.
Next, Dr. Ory, by request of the
club, gave a splendid lecture on
the “Proper Sanitation of the
House,” which was highly appre-
ciated. This was followed by a
beautiful paper by Mrs. M. K.
Witt, on “What Constitutes a Bet-
ter Baby.” She emphasized the
fact that before the better baby
must come tho bettor mother.
Mrs. Scurry then gave an ex-
cellent rendition of the poem “The
Baby.” Mrs. Cochran read a moat
original and brilliantly thoughtful
paper on “The Effect Roosevelt
Had on Race Suicide.
Mrs. Waring completed the pro-
gram with an original poem, ip her
characteristic style, on “The Bet-
ter Baby.”
