Found a Silver Mine.
San Angelo: Rod Campbell and Hen-
ry Eckhart, have returned from a trip
in Menard county prospecting for sil-
ver, and claim that they found a pay-
ing vein of silver carrying o small per
cent of gold. There is known to be
an old Spanish silver mine somewhere
in that country, and they were search-
ing for the old shaft. They were un-
successful in that attempt, but believe
their strike to fce in the vicinity of the
old mine.

A Timely Suggestion.
This is the season of the year when the i
'prudent and careful housewife replen-
' islies her supply of Chamberlain’s Cough j
Remedy. It is certain to be needed be j
fore the winter is over, and results are !
much more prompt and satisfactory!
when it is kept at hand given as soon as i
the cold is contracted and before it has 1
become settled in the system. In al-
most every instance a severe cold may
be warded off by taking this remedy’
freely as soon as the first indication of
the cold appears. There is no danger
in giving it to children for it contains
no harmful subst ance. It is pleasant
to take—both adults and children like j
it. Buy it and you will get the best. It!
always cures. For sale by Key Bros. 1
Panama's Official Family Rely on
United States Friend-
ship.
Colon, Nov. 30.—The next event of
political importance to the new re-
public of Panama will be the ratifica-
tion of the canal treaty and its return
to Washington, which is looked for-
ward to with much interest as conclu-
sively settling Panamza’s statue. The
ratification of the treaty appears to be
considered by the government as the
final step, so far as Panama is con-
cerned, absolutely binding the new re-
public to the protection of the United
States.
After this has been effected it is
thought on the isthmus that there will
remain nothing for Panama to do ex-
cept to proceed, under the security of
the irretention of the friendship of the
United States, with the development of
her internal affairs. The possibility of
a war with or armed trouble from
Colombia is not taken into serious con-
sideration anywhere on the isthmus,
and is never heard discussed, officially
or othdrwle.
The government officials seem to
think that in the event of any difficulty
situation arising they will have noth-
ing to do but turn to the United States
for wise Counsel and guidance, and
that if help is needed by Panama the
United States will supply It.
The provisions of the canal treaty
providing that the yearly payments of
$350,000 shall not begin until nine
years shall have elapsed and the
clause declaring Colon and Panama
free ports have aroused some fears re-
garding the republic’s ability to raise
sufficient reve.nue to meet its expenses
The making of Colon and Panama free
ports will deprive the republic each
year of about $300,000 in silver of
$120,000 in gold, this amount being
three-fifths of the total revenue of the
republic, outside of the railroad and
canal payments. Hence, the govern-
ment is particularly anxious that $8,-
000,000 of the $10,000,000 be paid on
account of the canal shall be so invest-
ed as to bear interest and be safe-
guarded from possible future assault
and reckless expenditure by less scrup-
ulous officials who may succeed those
now holding office.

The Good Old Kentucky Way.
Hodgenville, Ky.: Under cover of
darkness, while the intended victims
were sitting around the fireside, an
assassin alleged to be Custer Gerner,
now in jail, crept to the window of the
room and fired several times. Squire
Osborne fell to the floor dead, his head
torn almost off. His son was shot
through the heart, and Will Gardner
was wounded in the abdomen. John
Bennett’s left arm was shattered by a
ball. The trouble had its incipiency in
a family quarrel, which developed In-
to a factional fight.
