Dallas has been making much of Jay
Gould today She hasnt wined him
and dined him as she usually does her
capitalist visitor for the reason that he
brought with him in his car Ata
lanta bis own stock of wines and of
eatables as well as his own cook and
is therefore not doingJthe town for the
purnose of being ctpered up against a
square meal with champagne trim-
mings Besides as he is in uelicnto
health he has to be a little particular
about the character of the free lunches
that are offered him His name there-
fore does not appear on any of the hotel
registers although doubtless ho might
were ho to insist on it secure a differen-
tial rate from the one he saw fit to pat-
ronize He is herer however receiving
rauoh attention and being made much of
This morning at 10 oclock be appeared
at the mayors officp in the city hall
where an informal reception lasting au
hour was held during which Mr Gould
was introduced to and shook hands
with a largo number of the
representative capitalists business men
real estate boomers and citizons of Dal-
las
After seeing that ho was comfortably
corraled Mayor Connor fired at him a-
very pretty little speech telling him that
Dallas was glad to have him as a visitor
and guest That thoso who surrounded
him were her representative citizens
They had not forcotten that a few years
ago he had predicted that Dallas would
bo a great city and the younger portion
of them having faith in his predictions
had taken advantage of it and were glad
now that they did so nero Mr Gould
smiled Contiuuinir Mayor Connor said
that it was the desire of himself and the
people of Dallas that his visit be made a
pleasant one The people of Dallas were
his friends and they looked upon him as
the friend of their city
Mr Gould without rising made a
brief responso in au almost inaudible
voice saying that he was delichted with
his visit to Texas and returning thanks
to Mayor Connor for his kindly expres-
sion in behalf of the people of Dallas
The handshaking business was then re-
newed and kept up until nearly 11
oclock when Mr Gould left the build-
ing During tho day he visited the Dal-
las club the board of trade and was
driven over the city taking in Oak
Cliff The result is that he feels
tho result of his days handshaking
and is tonight considerably the worse
for wear As soon as ho could get free
from thoe who took him in charge witlr
the determination of showing him the
city or breaking something in the at
tcrart he made a bee line for his private
car where be is resting up before pro-
ceeding on his journey
On the whole however he was well
received here and well pleased with what
he saw and Dallas feels in fine feather
over his visit

of Austin and defeat of Fort Worth to-
day it being the last of the present
serses between these clubs proved the
most exciting game since the arrival of

continuous quarrelling and disputing be-
tween the players and tho umpire the
latter of whom seemed to bo most
blamed by tho spectators Fort Worth
certainly did high kicking and > it was the
general opinion that the great amount of
kicking dode by both clubs was not justi-

NkwYoiuc April 10 Union Pacifio
affairs monopolized the interest in Wall
street today The report that the Van
derbilts are buying stock and will have a
representation in the next board of di-
rectors took popiilar favor by its plausi-
bility in connection with recent events
The famous alliance between the Union
Pacific and Vnuderbrlts Chicago and
Northwestern was of coursethe basis of
the belief in the report Then
too Goulds suddenly manifested
antagonism towardthe alliance seemed to
some persons to bo partially explained
by the fact that he had awakened to tho
realization that the combination in tho
country above him > was strengthening
and hardening aud developing Into a
power loo creat to be combntted While
that combination does not now affect his
line there is no telling so those persons
Vrgue when possibly through the Al-
ton it will invade his territory Fur-
thermore thi3 theory tha fc Vander-
bilt Interests in the Union Pacifio
management servos satisfactorily to ex-
plain the presept boom in the stock
which has been puzzling the street
Vague talk of favorable legislation on
the funding bill was the principal expla-
nation offered Union Pacific does not
wish to see tho bill passed and about
tho only good news Which there could be
relative to tho bill would bo that it
was dead and that would only
be negatively favorable and could
hardly boom the stock Tho re-
sult of thestreeta thinking on this
sujeot is that the Btory of the Vanderbilt
interest m tho Union Pacific manage-
ment has a strong flavor of possibility
This sentiment was strongly reflected in
the course of tho stock which was ex-
tremely buoyant
The strength of Union Paoifio carried
the general market up slightly Lacka
wanna showing the principal advance
Tho reportof the Rook Island road for
ton months was something of a puzzle
It was so vague that it was
difficult to tell just what
dividend it represented as earned on the
stock even for the ten months Allow
ine the large amount of 800000 for net
earumes of the inbnths of February and
March of this year which isr an unofficial
estimate based on the faot that traffio
was large during these months it was
difficult by any method to figure 4 per-
cent earned on the stock for the year
Dealers wisely left the stock alone such
quotations as those were being at sub-
stantially uuchaucod figureB

pression seemed to be that Corbin had

The Bank of Encland reduced its rate

move had been expected for so long and
had been so thoroughly nnticipaed in he
course of money iu tho open mavkPt that
the announcement created no interest
and had no especial effect either in Lon-

Foreign exchange was stronger The
demand was limited but tho supply of

leading gambling houses were arrested
this morning on affidavits sworn out by
H S Levy charging them with gaming
and exhibiting gambling devices They
gave bond and will have preliminary ex-
amination in the morning H S Levy
the prosecutor in this case Is encatred in

Luck being against him here he left and
went against Nortons bank and dropped

the Frenchy came and lost making
his losses for the night very nearly S700
Levy says ho was bo nearly distracted
with his losses that if it had not
been for his superior will power
he would have committed self
destructiou Wednesday morning ho re-
alized that ho had been tamrht a
wholesome lesson nnd determined to save
others from the same costly experience
by suppressing and closing up gambling

sought legal advice hich resulted in
affidavits being made and the arrest of
the gamblers of the houses where
he had lost bis money Levy denies that
he is actuatedby malice or desin to se-

regards as a good investmentbut claims
his sole and only motive is to suppress

assist him in his work
Mr Levy is an educated cultivated
gentleman of tho world about thirty
years old married and has none of
the elements of crankism about him
but speaks iu a couvinciug and deter-

suffer from sources inimical to his mis-

TflESIASSMEET15T
the Farmers Alliance Officers
iLast night J B Boydson president
of the Farmers county alliance and
John S Morris and B F Dwiggins were
discussing tho mass mee ing whlch jRlrJl
be held in the courthouse tonight an
which the citizens are urged to at
while a Gazette man listened
The meeting tomorrow cightj
rr7
Mr Morris will be entirely in the In-
terest of harmony There will be
speeches short ones mado by the citi-
zens who will be led by Mayor Pendlo
ton and then apeeohes by Alliance men
Our sole objeot Is to eet the people to
understand the Farmers Alliance its
aims aud euds
Yes said Mr Dwiggin3 the meet
ing 8prane from a chance remark of
one of the prominent citizens in town
who said when he was asked to dine
with the Alliance at our last meeting
Oh theyve got no use for me theyd
cut my throat if they could The re-
mark was quoted in our meeting and a
vote was immediately taken to havo an
open meeting at our next session aud to
put ourselves squarely before the people
Thats what this meeting is for
J B Boydsou who is the president of
tho county Alliance corroborated tho
expressions of the other gentlemen and
added that if th re were any other object
in view except or beyond that of working
harmoniously tocether for the sood of all
he would most certainly not be in the
movement
Presideut W L Robinson of the oity
Farmers Alliance which numbers about
120 members spoke in a similar strain
but added that he thought the subject of
the farmers purchasing their supplies
from the Moss collar bagging and
cordage company ought to come up
for discussion and probably would be
canvassed He is very enthusiastic over
the products of the home factory and
states that if the trust bagging gets into
this section it will have to fight hard for
it The factory has just got in 200000
pounds of raw jute which is only one
sixth of the amount on the way and Mr
Robinson thinks that the farmers of this
section will by means of tho meeting to-
night see that this is the proper place to
get their seasons supplies In faot he
expects there will be a better under-
standing all around aud both sides will
be immensely benefited

Al Swift tho new secondbaseman
whom the Fort Worth management has
secured is on bis way and will join the
club at Galveston He will probably
pass through this citv and may stop off a
train
Mr Fogarty has also signed Jerry
Reardon a pitcher of some note and ho
is under orders to report at once in Fort
Worth If he arrives in time to be of
any service to the club before their re-
turn to this city he will join them on tho
trip Another balltosser who bears the
unique name of Smith has also been
signed and will soou make his appear-
ance on the diamond where he will occu-
py the position of change pitcher Smith
is said to have a good record
Tobie is showing up in the box in fine
shape and with a little more practice
and better control of the ball will do ex-
cellent work Mercer hasnt yet nttained
the staying powers that he will have
when the season is a little older Maurer
will be laid up for three or four weeks
with his ankle and will be a big loss to
the team which has had a series of
misfortunes since the season opened But
they are very slowly getting into shape
aud with the new men to help them will
probably be heard from

found one particular woman w
Hellen doted on A waiting game w is
played About a week ago she besat t
prepare for llight So did Sullivan a 1
James and when tho woman t3 i a
train for New Orleans these two u u
were with her but unknown to her e
came through Now Orlenus to Galveston
to Houston At tho latter plai sb
spotted her pursuers But she didnt
spem to mind that for she came on to
Fort Worth arriving here last iloudav
night about 9 oolock
When she alighted at the Union depit
in this city she took a hack and told the
driver to go up town But soon she ob-
served that hor pursuers were in another
bach following her and tracing her step
by step Leaning out of her carnage
window she said to the driver
You see that hack behind me Tio
men in that hack have followed me nil
the way from Alabama Now I want
you to drive out in the suburbs an 1
shako them off tho trail
The driver was willing nnd straight-
way put whip to his horses and dashed
out to the East Side of tho city
So did the other hack The pursuers
were not to be shaken so easily aud hour
after hour the two carriages drove ono
after another as rapidly as whip coui1
make the horses go
Finally Jehu No 1 gave up and told
the lady it was no use The moon was
too bright He could not get away from
the other carriage
Then drive to the Piokwick was
the order
And to the Pickwiok went both car-
riages The woman Registered as Mrs
E W Nesby
Tuesday meming Mrs E W Nesby
left the hotel and went to a house down-
town where the officers easily traced
herThe
The next question was to find the hid-
ing place of her paramour Officer Seba
Maddox was called on for aid He had
an idea He got a hack driver to take
her out and get her drunk secure her
telegrams several of whioh she had re-
ceived during the day
The plan worked admirably The dis-
patch whioh gave tho desired clew was
dated Fort Sumpter New Mexico signed
t > y Hellen telling the woman to meet
him at a small station up on the Fort
Worth and Denver about sixty miles
from Fort Sumpter That was what De-
tective Sullivan wanted
That night also the woman engaged
a back to take her out to Kyie early the
next morning that ia Wednesday morn
insr The detective understood that
dodge Tho woman wanted to
catoh the Donver train at that point so
as not to be seen getting on at the Union
depot in Fort Worth
So that fine morning the detective
jumped on the Denver train at the Union
depot expecting Mrs Nesby to get on at
Kyio
But he wa disappointed
At this point of the game the woman
was too sharp for him Instead of tak-
ing the Denver she drove on to tho Mis-
souri Kansas and Texas wentto Whites
boro over to Gainesville and from there
she is lost She may havo gone to Hen
rietta and caught the Denver on Thurs-
day morning a day behind Sullivan or
she may have gone to Purcell and around
to Now Mexico over the Santa Fe
Atany rate Sullivan Is now at Claren
don waiting for Mrs Nesby to come
tbrouzh that he mar shadow her and
catch the defaulting Hellen Maybe be
will catoh him Maybe ho will not
Mr James is still in Fort Worth He
is a quiet man and very much of the
gentleman in appearance and deport-
ment He says he doesnt care so much
about the loss of 4000 but he wants to
teach Hellen that he isnt to be done up
in any such style as that attempted
