liot Itntn War
Yesterday TnE Gazctts predicted that when
the ninety day truce between Western railroads
expired thero would be another rate war and
there is hardly a d mbt that it will be verifie I
The managers agreement which expires Octo-
ber 2j ai one time bade fair to put a stop to the
rate cutting that had l < ccn going on among the
Western roads for months but it is doubtful ir
the nice lasts until thai date It is op > nlv
charge i that the Kocfc Island unl Burlington
are making cuts on iron conimoJitits between
Chuago and Colorado and Utah points and that
the t Louis liiKs consisting of the Missouri
Pacific and the s > auta Fo were adopting the
same practices
A few day ago all things looked pleasant aid
noi a ripp e disturbed the sunase of thes1ua
tl m but the Santa lo and It ck Island bgin
cuttinir at Kansas Citv aod the bill was opened
on coal rates from Chicago The open rate is
i JO per ton bui there is evidence tnat several
large dealers are getting a S S rate which is a
cut of seventy cents per ton It is asa sai J but
not proei that cut rates arc being made on
other commodities
It is a curious fact in connection with the coal
rate cut that the Acton vrhici has always de-
clared that whenever any of the competing line
were found en aged in taking a tecrei rate it
would at once make it an open ra e has in lhi <
iusance inner a I the c it claiming that it is not
a coal traffic road and will not interfeic Yet
ihi Alton claims to be a Kansas Citv road and
by its past actions has entitled iself to the
name It mav be poisib c that the Western
lrjight association m ty oe ub e tj smooth over
the present exhibitions of mutiny against the
trace but at this writi ng it seems doubtful

Chicago 111 Sept 27 A morninu
paper says If the general state-
ments are any indication there are more
serious grievances than a demand for an in-
crease or pay back of the meeting of the gen-
eral grievance committees of the engineers and
conductors of the Northwestern railway just
finished in this city An issue is likely to be
raised in the nenr tatuc that uil overshadow
all const ierations of hours or r a cs and that is
the exittjnee of a brohcrhooJ among the cm
pic yes of the company 1 his is rather a sur-
prising state ot i ffiirs as the Ncrthwestern has
always had the reputition of dta ng with Its
men with much consideration an I promoting
rather than opposing employes in ihe train ser-
vice but now tnese men complain that many of
them are being discharged without sufficient
cause and no satisfactory explanation ghen
for their dismissal The suspicion that this was
lone for the purpose of breaking up the various
brotherhoods was clinched by ihe uttennce
whim is reported to lave been recently made
by the master mechanic of the road to
the tffic that the officers show no
mercy to them they suspect and the under-
standing among the men of the VaaJerbllt
line if not among railroad presidents in eennral
to disrupt the union and the Northwestern is
set down as a Yanderbilt llae in spite of the re-

next Monday morning will be called for trial the
suit of the Farmers loan and trust company and
John Kennedy et al vs the International and
Great Northern railway company wherein the
plaintiffs seek tt foeclose mortgge for the col-
lection of S13iiiO < ii > Oj in bonds on the road The
state intervenes in the case and cnarges that
the bonds were Gcticiously Ijsucl and are void
and that tneir payment will force huh traffic
charges on the pubic the msin ground being
that said bonds were issued ulhoLt monev paid
to or property received by or labor performed on
said roaJ as required by the constitution in suuu
cases The ailuineygeneral contends that rail-
roads are created for the purpose of serving the
public for a reasonable return and an honest
investment and not for speculative purposes
such as isuing ficticious bonds and watered
stock The court has already held with the
state to the effect that bonds issued in violation
of the statues and constitution are void This
was done in the opinion of the court overrul-
ing the plaintiffs motion to stride out the
states plea of intervention The hearing now
will be more en questions of fact than of law
