the results of ye terduy My gratifica-
tion is that of an Amerioan proud of bis
fellowcountrymen who though led
away for a time by party prejudices and
by blind confidence in cuuninp aod
selfish leaders could not bo deluded to
their ruin They have demonstrated
that in dealing with them it is not safe
to calculate that they are stupid or
heedless of the welfare of their country
The necessity of tariff reform with its
consequent reduction in the cost of liv-
ing aud the duty of the Democratic
party to advocate it has been fully
demonstrated by the aotlon of the peo-
ple yesterday Their decision has been
deliberately made and it is all the more
significant because they have voted upon
their reason and judgment and because
they have proved that corruption is
powerless as against their convictions
Of course there is nothing for the Demo-
cratic party to do but

tory is won the question of tariff reiorm
will not be settled nor the pledges or
professions of the Democratic party to
the people redeemed Our party has
made an honest and earnest tight It
hns planted itself upon the disinterested

the people It is in absolute unity and
