OLD PATER COLLECTED
Every Saturday at the Texas Can-
ning Company Warehouse.
Farmers and ranchers who will
be required to make their first in-
come tax return by next March 15,
have the choice of two methods in
computing the tax on their 1941 In-
comes. One Is the “accrual” and
*he other “cash".
According to Tyrus R. Timm,
economist in farm management of
the A. and M. College Extension
Service, “accrual” means that be-
ginning and endi-of-the-year in-
ventories, as well as cash expenses,
cash incomes, accrued incomes andin ; o„nrl Tn
prepaid expenses are used in de-1 r UrridS ndlld IO
termining profits. Those who keep Uot Instructor From
no records, or only records of cash . ,
recetots and disbursements, must * BWI1CC, UKmrlOmci
use the “cash” method. Timm sug-) -
gests that farmers and ranchmen
who have not paid lneome taxes
prior to this year should study the
alternative methods before making
their selections as the one chosen is
binding for succeeding years un-
less another method is authorized by
the Internal Revenue Bureau. Even
in that case certain adjustments of
Income are necessary.
More than 95 percent of Texas
farmers and ranchmen who paid in-
come t?x in 1940 used the ,rcash”
method.
Examining both methods. Timm
first points out that unmarried
farmers whose incomes exceed $750,
and married farmers with gross in-
comes of $1,500 or ovre are required,
to file returns. A deduction of $400
is allowed for each eligible depen-
dent.
Under the “cash” method, all
cash received from sale of live-
stock products, crops and other in-
ccme from similar sources, togeth-
er with cash received for work and
other services outside the farm are
subject to tax. All government pay-
ments received also should be ln-
incluc’e increases in inventories still
rluded. Income not subject to tax
cn the farm, farm products used by
the family (if production costs not
included) and state refund on gas
tax, provided the net cost of gaso-
’lne is reported.
Cost of livestock, livestock pro-
ducts and crops purchased which
are sold within the year are expen-
ses which may be deducted in the
tax return, Timm says. If desired,
as capital asset, depreciation may
be taken on livestock for work,
breeding, or dairy purposes. Other
deducts permitted Include ordinary
and necessary expenses on feeding
and raising livestock, as well as all
rther disbursements In crop produc-
tion, cultivating and processing; de-
preciation on farm buildings (ex-
cept residences), permanent

General Page emphasized, how-
ever, that no transient address may
be recorded! and that Selective Ser-
vice Regulations prohibit any inter-
ference or dictation by a registrar
when a registrant who has more
than one place of residence Is mak-
ing his choice as to which he desires
recorded as hLs home address.
"It Is the Intent of the law and
the purpose of Selective Service
Regulations,’’ General Page point-
ed out, “that each man be regis-
tered at his home address andi be
subject to call to fill quotas from
that Local Board. That Is a basic
principle of democratic procedure
and I expect every Selective Service
registrar in the 8tate of Texas to
adhere strictly to It.”
Registration cards to be used Fe-
bruary 16th will contain a space for
the registrant to list his place of
residence. In the event that he has
more than one place, he is requir-
ed to list his own choice as his
place of residence.
In addition, the registration card
will have space for recording a mall
address. This may be the same as
