In several cities of Texas auto
speeding is not permitted near
school houses, and large signs
bearing the legend “Slow Down,"
are posted at various corners near
schools. Several hundred child-
ren are dismissed twice each day
from the Stephenville school, and
they fill the streets—ahappy, care
free crowd—heedless of danger.
Automobile drivers pass and re-
pass at breakneck speed on the
several streets surrounding the
school campus, and some day one
9f them will cause a funeral. Each
drives as if he were a day late,
and had to make up time. The
officers should advise them to start
a day earlier on their trip so there
will be no necessity for speeding.
Near the Barnes property on
West Washington the speed fiend
is doing his level best to send
some to West End.
It is difficult to make arrests, but
the officers should adopt some ex-
pedient that will lead to arrests,
and the courts should assess the
maximuifl fines, so that when the
enemy of mankind leaves the court
house or jail he will have a whole
some respect for the law. In the
meantime all parents should urge
their children to avoid the middle
of the street.

WHITE DRUG CO.
People on Alarm creek have been
pesteriM lately by wolves, and Mrs.
Wash Keith and her brother, Wal-
ter Keith determined. to~ put a
stop to the depredations. These
varmints killed turkeys, chickens
and pigs belonging to Tom Hig-
ginsA Joe Fitzgerald, Walter Keith
and others. Early Thursday mofh-
ing, April 22, Mrs. Wash Keith got
her L. C. Smith shot gun and Wal-
ter Keith his 38 Winchesters Mrs.
Keith entered a big thicket, and
her brother taking a stand near
the railroad. In a few minutes
Mrs. Keith jumped a big wolf, and
fired a load of No. 4 shot into it.
The wolf was wounded and left the
thicket, when Walter Keith began
firing at it. Mrs. Keith then got
a second shot, and her last cart-
ridge was gone. She threw down
the gun, gathered rocks, and began
to beat the brute. Mr. Keith and
his sister finally killed the wolf,
and seven very fat whelps were
found in the thicket. The slain
wolf had a steel trap attached to
her foot, but this did not prevent
her from putting up a stiff fight.
Wash Keith came to town for am-
munition for'his wife who is going
on a hunt for a second big wolf
known to be prowling in that
neighborhood.
Lindsey Phillips, Bert Watson
and Boliver Roberts caught a num-
ber of fine bass Wednesday. Mr.
Roberts brought one home with
him which weighed eight pounds.

When s man walks into s store and “snaps” st the
clerk, he is usually not greatly surprised if the clerk’s
reply is a little “snappish,” too; human nature la built
that way.
The young women who operate the telephone switch-
boards are taught that they must be courteous to patrons
if they wish to retain their places. Yet telephone opera-
tors are human—just like other folks.
Ththgs do hot always go exactly right around the
telephone exchange—Just ss in the office, the store, or even
in the home. No telephone apparatus has yet been manu-
factured that works absolutely perfectly, all the time and
under all conditions. •
Some delays, Inconveniences, and some poor service
must be expected. Even trains are sometimes late; store
deliveries sometimes go astray, and letters sometimes
reach the wrong address.
And, somehow, when things go wrong around the
telephone office, “calling down” the operator never seems
to remedy them.
