SEVERAL weeks back we said
^ there was nothing new that was
really good in the situation com-
edy field . . . That was written
before the debut of Phil Silvers’
hilarious “You’ll Never Get Rich”
. . . This is a riotous show with
an original theme and a natural
for the Silvers’ talent ... As a
regular army sergeant with a
penchant for engaging raw re-
cruits in his highly specialized
poker maneuvers, it promises to
be one of the highlights of the new
television season . Whrt’s more
it has innumerable possibilities
and we predict it will be some
time before it loses its appeal.
Judy Garland was rather
crushed at the aritics’ reception
of her long-awaited television de-
but But she proved more of a
trouper than Betty Hutton, who,
when she was similarly panned,
went into a tearful retirement (the
shortest in show business history)
. Judy will be back for the sec-
ond round with what she hopes
will be a definite improvement
Actually, Judy herself was
tops, as always The only real
thing wrong was just, a little too
much Judy for a full-hour show
Even troupers can produce
yawns when left on their own for
that length of time.

COLUMBIA: — With “Guys and
Dolls” being released, it was only
to be expected that a deluge of
songs would swamp the record
market Rosemary Clooney
does “Pet Me, Poppa” from the
movie and scores high with it .
Reverse has “Wake Me” . .
Frankie Laine also joins the band
wagon and his “A Woman in Love”
is his best disc in some time . . .
It’s backed by “Walking the Night
Away”. . . And last but far from
least, there’s Jerry Vale with “Ade-
laide,” a lilting ditty . . . “Miracle
in the Rain” is on the flip side.
