Winters May Be Building
9-Man Wall Against Dogs
The Winters Blizzards may throw
up a nine-man line to atop the
Brady Bulldogs' running game as
the old rivals square off in Win-
ters Friday night.
Winters has found the nine-man
line an effective if not altogether
successful weapon against the
Bulldogs in yiurs past. That was
the Blizzards' strategy hack in
md. and the Bulldogs finally hud
to take to the air to win, 13-7.
Last year’s game too, started
out as a defensive battle, but a 73-
yard kickoff return by Brady's
Charles Ortiz in the final second
before baftime took the wind out
of the Blizzards, and the Doggies
went on to win, 10-7.

The Blizzards lost their opener
to Crane, 21-X, but downed An-
son last week, 12-7. Brady, idle
last week, has one 2S-tt win over
Ballinger.

tin- trees have grown so much
this summer that the branches ale

The council ulso studied u pro-

weeds he cut from vaiant lots,
which have created traffic hazards
at street intersections.

To help with the harvest, 15
Mexican nationals have been con-
tracted They arrived here early
Tuc day morning and went to work
Tuesday afternoon.
A house has been rented for
them in Fredonia, and they do
their own cooking. They were se-
emed after the farmers had com-
plied with a long list of govern-
ment regulations governing hous-
ing. sanitation, etc.
The Mexicans were brought here
when the farmers couldn't find suf*
fn lent local field hands—men at
least who would do the job the
wav the farmers want it done.
Sweet potatoes have to b«
"handled like an egg," and thosa
that are skinned, bruised, or brok-
en cannot be sold. The farmers
complain that last year local
humls pulled up the vines and
shipped the potatoes against tha
crate
"If you complained, they just
quit and sat down in their cars."
• * «
The harvest will take at least
six weeks, nlthough the potatoes
must he out of the ground before
the first frost. The farmers plow
up the field, iin>l the hurids follow
behind, pulling the potatoes from
the vine and packing them in wood-
en crates. The crates are shipped
here flat and then the sides and
bottoms are assembled by tha
farmers.
The lids remain at the co-op
warehouse until the potatoes are
ready to go through the washing
line for sale.
