Jacket Baseball Drills Begin;
Eight ’69 Lettermen Return
Eight lettermen greeted
Coach Ken Mays on the
opening day of baseball drills,
with another, Johnny
Rockwell, due to appear after
the end of basketball play.
Those who began workouts,
when the first call was made,
were Bobby Dunham, Max
Swafford, Dick Goertz, Jim
Williams, Trey Williams, Guy
Cook, Tim Moore and Larry
Logan.
Mays has a large squad of
some 47 candidates, including
31 now working out. Another
16 will report Feb. 18, the day
following the final basketball
game.
On hand are five seniors, 10
juniors, 12 sophomores and
four freshmen. In addition to
Rockwell, who is a senior, the
cage team prospects have one
junior, six sophs and eight
freshmen.
Seniors going through drills
are Swafford, Dunham, Goertz,
Jim Williams and Trey
Williams. Juniors are Cook,
Terry Green, Joel Jones,
Moore, Danny Rivera, Ronald
Shaver, Jessie Vejil, Jack
Strickler, Dana Crabb and
Weldon Leard.
Sophomores listed are
Tommy Randolph, David
Desilets, Hilary Gleitz, Logan,
Bubba Milstead, Darrell
Preston, Tim Weaver, Gene
Young, Ricky Payne, Dan
Westmoreland, Noel Rodriquez
and Larry Green.
Freshman prospects are
Jerry Adams, Sammy
Hay good, Charles Hammond
and Mike Pixley. Carl Dunn is
handling the manager’s post,
and will be joined by George
Sanchez and Paul Briones when
basketball is completed.
In addition to Rockwell, the
following will be available after
the basketball season is over: J.
W. Phillips, junior; Fred Green,
Harold Hix, Steve Jolley, Bo
Smith, Val Walker, Mike
Cubine, sophomores; Gary
Gregory, Terry Hill, Jackie
Mills, Larry Purcell, Gary
Shaver, Pat Stidham, Doug
Swafford and Wyndell
Caviness, all freshmen.
Mays is assisted by Mike
Quimby, who will take over
the junior varisty after the
squad has been evaluated and
cut into A and B teams.
The Jacket coach said he is
pleased with workouts so far,
and is putting in a lot of time
on fundamentals, throwing and
base work. Mays said the team
broken down includes 18
infielders, counting pitchers
and catchers, and 13
outfielders.
An intrasquad game will be
held Thursday, if drills
continue to go as planned. The
session will begin about 4:15
p.m.
Mays added that the squad
has good depth, and has several
boys who have played three
years. He expects help from
those who are currently
playing basketball.
The pitching staff includes
Moore, Logan and Dunham.
The coaches are spending a lot
of time with freshman Mike
Pixley, but he will probably see
more action in the outfield.
Mays listed Andrews and
Pecos as the two teams to beat
with Monahans, Seminole and
Ft. Stockton to follow in that
order. He is optimistic about
his own Jacket team.

BAD BUSINESS GETTING
WORSE, BANDIT LEARNS
It was a bad day for bank
robbing in Raleigh, N.C. A
would-be bandit hid in the
men’s washroom of the First
Citizens Bank just before
closing time.
But after the front door had
been locked, and he emerged
to get the loot, he found that
the vault door had been
locked, and the timing device
wouldn’t permit it to be
opened. The frustrated robber
satisfied himself by taking the
bank manager’s wallet.
