Freda Brittain Will Pick Up The Tab!
Submitted by Pamela A. King
Here’s a GREAT way to help kids and let Freda Brittain, a neighbor in Double Oak,
‘pick up the tab!’ Freda is collecting the pull-tabs from aluminum cans, and would
really appreciate yours. Here’s why:
Freda and her husband, Jim Brittain are active members of the Hella Shrine, in Gar-
land and the ‘Rollin’ Nobles,’ its R.V. Club. They enjoy the fun and fellowship of the
Shriners organization, a long respected fraternal group known for its children’s hospi-
tals. The Brittains, like other Shriners, also take the job of raising money seriously.
Shriners have supported free medical and hospital care for children since 1922, when
the very first Shrine Hospital opened. Through the years, the Shriners have succeeded
in providing the funding to open, staff and fully support 21 additional children’s hospitals
across the country, providing top-notch medical care to more than 700,000 children
each year absolutely free.
For her part, Freda is competing with other members of the Texas Shriner R.V. Club
to see who can collect the most aluminum pull-tabs. The proceeds from recycling the
pull-tabs go to help the Shriners’ Children’s Bum Hospital, in Galveston. More spe-
cifically, the R.V. Club donates its recycling dollars to the Ronald McDonald House in
Galveston, so parents and families who have a child in the Bum Hospital have a free
place to stay, for the duration of their son or daughter’s treatment and rehabilitation.
It’s worth noting Freda has been collecting pull-tabs long before this important collection/competition began: Freda is a walker and
she picks up trash along the way. In fact, you’ll find Freda and her neighbor, Mary Jane Smith, walking the four mile route, from one end
of King’s Road to the other and back, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings, for exercise. They’ve been doing that for the last
three and a half years.

“It started when my husband and I moved from Cross Timbers Drive to the Brittain family home, founders of Double Oak,” recalls
Mrs. Brittain. “I’ve always been a walker and there was so much trash along Kings Road, I
just decided that was the route I’d take!”
Freda and Mary Jane have been picking up the trash and aluminum cans along their way
these past few years. “We both fill up a grocery bag each morning we walk,” Freda said. “The
pull-tabs go to my collection for the Shriners, the aluminum cans are recycled and we donate
that money to the Double Oak Volunteer Fire Department and the rest just helps keep the
environment clean. “Sure, it feels good to be able to help out like we do,” said Freda. “There’s
only so much we can donate ‘out of pocket’ so this is a way to do a little more!”
Mostly, Freda and Mary Jane do what they do - walking, picking up litter and collecting
recyclables - because they’re out walking anyway. They are fond, though, of quoting Mark
Twain, who said he could live two weeks on a compliment. “When someone stops to thank
us,” says Freda, “we just grin at each other and say, and ‘That’s two weeks-worth!”’
More and more folks are pitching in these days, to help Freda with her collections of both
aluminum cans and pull-tabs. Neighbors and others who know what she’s doing are calling to
see how they can get add their cans and/or pull-tabs to her collection. If you would like to help
out, please contact Freda by phone (817) 430-4922 or by e-mail brittain@popi.net.
You really can make a difference! Just set aside those cans, instead of tossing them into the
trash or municipal recycling bin.
