Lost Wednesday night, Oct.
10, old Uncle Wash Jordan passed
away. Uncle Wash was known
by everybody in and near Car-
thage, and those who do not re-
call his name will remember him
as the constant attendant, dur-
ing the last days, of Judge J. G.
Hazlewood. He was a genuine
“old time darkey,” and will be
missed, not only by his own col-
or, but by our white citizens as
well, for Uncle Wash was a use-
ful old darkey.
Not many more of these old
time darkies are left. Peace to
his ashes.

The time Is near at hand when the

the right to again go forth and kill

At exactly five o’clock last
Saturday afternoon The Panola
Watchman’s Popular Plano Vot-
ing Contest closed. The contest
closed as it has been conducted
—quietly, honestly and honora-
bly, and Miss Myrtle Carswell
secured the piano.
About 4:46 interested specta-
tors, friends of the paper and
the contestants, began to gather
at the office to witness the Anal
moments of, perhaps, the most
successful contest ever inaugu
rated by a country weekly news-
paper. As the moments slipped
by interest became more intense
and voting more rapid. No an-
nouncement of the minutes as
they were ticked off by the watch
was called out. Everybody Had
received due notice of the clos-
ing hour, and the instant the
hand reached 6 o’clock, the edi-
tor of the Watchman arose from
his desk and announoed the con-
test was Anished, although many
were around him wanting to sub-
scribe for the paper, some for
Ave, ten and one for twenty
years, to help their favorite con-
testant We regret the loss of
these subscriptions, we regret
the disappointment of those who
could not be waited on, but we
have no apologies to make, for
we stated that at 6 o’clock the
contest would close, and we
meant what we said. These par-
ties had plenty of time earlier in
the day when the girls were al-
most begging for help.
To the young ladies, who alone
made it possible for us to make
such a great success of our Con-
test, we desire to tender our
sincere thanks and highest ap-
preciation for their efforts.. Al-
though hut one could get the
piano, we feel that we have
made personal, lifelong friends
of each of them.
Our circulation has increased
wonderfully, far beyond our
wildest dreams, and while the
Watchman has always enjoyed a
splendid circulation, when the
last name due to this contest has
been placed in type, we believe
we will have the largest circula-
tion of any country newspaper
published in East Texas.
In another column will be
found the report of the commit-
tee who awarded the prizes, to-
gether with the vote each win-
ning contestant received. In
awarding the prizes Mr. Stewart
acted as spokesman for the com-
mittee. To this committee the
Watchman editor desires to ex-
press his sincere thanks for their
services.

A solution to the good roads
problem will be for the commis-
sioners to see to it that every
road overseer does his duty
working the public roads and
that overseers be furnished the
best methods for working roads,
and that they pay no more for
mules and plows than is paid for
a like service on the farm, and
every man over forty-five work
some road of his choice, not a
public road, at least one-half
mile, keeping his half mile of
road in good passable condition.
This plan will greatly improve
all roads. 1 will keep my half
mile in good shape. Let us mean
business. Everybody likes good
roads. Work on the roads is a
money saver, a good invest-
ment .
H. C. LaGrone.
