REV. LARRY BARNES
First Christian Church
Easter is just a few weeks
in the distance of the past. I
wonder, has the message of the
Risen Christ been forgotten?
The vitality of our Christian
faith is to be found in the fact
of the resurrection. Shall we,
with Paul, review our faith in
this history-making event.

I Corinthians 15:3-8
"For I delivered unto you
first of all that which also I
received: That Christ died for
our sins according to the
Scriptues; and that He was
buried; and that He hath
been raised on the third day
according to the Scriptures;
and that He appeared to Ce-
phas; then to the twelve; then
He appeared to above five-
hundred brethren at once, of
whom the greater part remain
until now, but some are fallen
asleep; then He appeared to
James; then to all the apos-
tles; and last of all, as to the
child untimely born, He ap-
peared to me also.”
There came a day, a dread
day, when the sun sent down at
noonday behind a blood-spat-
tered wooden Cross, on the hill
that was, in shape like a skull.
Remembering how the black
night came at midday, all who
were there said, "He is dead!”
Everyone there that day said,
"He is dead”: The curious
crowd, unconscious of spiritual
values, said it. The Elders said
it. The centurian who super-
vised the crucifixion said it. The
Sadducees said it, along with
the Pharisees, Caiaphas said it.
The people who hoped it might
have been Him who would re-
deem Israel said it. The women
who followed afar off said it.
The Disciples, disappointed in
themselves, said it. Joseph of
Arimathea not alone said it,
but he took the body and buried
it in his own tomb.
The hopes of the followers of
Christ crashed with that death!
A huge chasm arose between
them and their fondest hopes.
His royal robes became a
shroud. His only crown had
been one of thorns. His coro-
nation acclaim, spit from sneer-
ing lips. His throne was a
blood-spattered cross and His
only glory—shame. His inaugu-
ral speech was a lonely cry,
and His coronation companions
were two thieves. Yes, Jesus
of Nazareth died, and His
friends mourned His death. He
was dead! He had died as all
others, with no heart beat—and
—He had been stabbed in the
side with a spear. His was cer-
tainly a lifeless body, which was
buried that day in Joseph’s
tomb.
Everything was taking its
natural course ... a man had
died as all other men. He had
been buried as other men, but
something happened that took
this natural thing out of its
proper setting, and, burned it-
self into human history to the
extent that it is still blazing its
pathway into the hearts of men
and women all over the world!
"He rose again from the dead.”
The day He arose was His
Day! He resumed His power
and recovered his challenged
rights. He regained His wan-
ing influence and reasserted
Himself as the Son of God! In
the midst of His enemies He
arose — confounding their coun-
sels and thwarting their efforts
to destroy Him.
The victory of Jesus over
death is the best established
fact in human history. Upon
this resurrection the apostles
founded their message arid their
work. When He arose as a vic-
tor from the grave. He estab-
lished the beginning of Christian
history! The Birth of a Living
Hope — For All Men Who Be-
lieve! My friends, this vitality
of Christianity was brought
about by the finding of the emp-
ty tomb! If we had no risen
Christ, we would have a tomb
as worthless as any other tomb
—a cross no more than a mar-
tyr’s cross, and a black shadow
which no sun could ever pene-
trate, nor trumpet sound be
heard through death’s dreary
dominion to awaken the dead
from eternal sleep. Within
the fact of the resurrection of
Jesus of Nazareth we find the
vitality of our faith! Without
a risen Christ, death would mock
our hopes like a coarse com-
edian, and the whole history
of Christianity and its existence
would be unintelligible. With
no risen Christ, we would go
down like Fcachel of old, to
judgment — weeping for her
children, finding no comfort!
At the trial of Jesus we have
a ruler standing before a throng
that desires him to do a dis-
honorable and unjust deed. A
politician rather than a states-
man, he was sensitive to sit-
uations which would threaten
his popularity. Attempting to
please everyone, he does the
will of the crowd, and then
washes his hands in a basin of
water as a declaration that he
has no responsibility in the mat-
ter. This wa$, the action of a
man of indecision and instabili-
ty, who stood aside and let Je-
sus go to His death. He is
typical of those who claim that
they are in no way responsible
for the wrongs and sins and sor-
rows of the world.
Many years ago, open wells
were the source of most of the
drinking water. When typhoid
germs were in the well, it didn’t
purify the water to paint the
pump! The only thing to do
was clean out the well. That
seems to be the situation in
which we today find ourseves!
A world of space investigation
is so dependent upon its dis-
coveries that God is no longer
needed. This is a dangerous
state and one to be considered
seriously!
We, today, are living in the
shadow of Communism — some-
thing must be done! The Church
of the Living Christ is our only
weapon with which to fight this
advance of a Godless regime.
Every Lord’s Day should be an
Easter Sunday — renewing our
faith in the risen Christ. With
man’s willingness and God’s
help, may this come to pass.
Because, therein lies our sal-
vation.
