Mail missing?
Story by Spc. Adam Nuelken
Staff Writer
Does it seem like you are missing some of your mail?
Wondering if Mom and Dad don't love you because they aren't
writing, haven't gotten your favorite magazine yet, or bill state-
ments?
If you live in the barracks on post, don't go postal because you
don't get your mail- it's happening across Fort Stewart.
The problem comes from soldiers' address not being written
properly, according to Mariann Worley, Installation Postal
Officer. Soldiers' addresses consist of four lines:
Soldier's rank and full name
Soldier's unit name
Street address for barracks building in which the soldier lives
City, state ZIP code
Some companies, however, can only accept a three-line
address. In this situation, Worley advised, "ask the representative
to place your abbreviated unit name in parenthesis on the same
line as your rank and name." If the address is three lines it should
read:
PVT John Doe (3/7 CAV)
111 iGulick Ave.
Ft. Stewart, GA 31314
If a soldier wants to add their mail box number to their
address, tell mailers to place it in parenthesis after the unit name.
If it is placed on the same line as the mailing address the U. S.
Postal Service automated equipment will attempt to read the
number as a suite number and the letter will be mis-sent.
- The Department of Information Management Post Locator
continues to return a considerable amount of mail because the
delivery address lacks a street number and name.
"So if you've been expecting mail but not receiving it, that
could be the cause," Worley said. "Check with your correspon-
*:ent to ensure they have your proper address. If you don't know
your address, talk to your mail clerk."
AAFES check-cashing
plan to eliminate fear
of identity theft

CuppIn our fast-paced, high-tech world of information sharing over
the internet, there are many dangers associated with identity
theft.
Within seconds, information from credit cards to Social
Security numbers can be downloaded by cyber thieves who are
waiting to take someone's Social Security number, so they can
steal their credit history and access their bank accounts.
Writing Social Security numbers on checks is seen by many as
an open invitation for identity theft, accordingato Tim Bailey,
Chief of the Army and Air Force Exchange Service's
Management Information Systems Fiscal Support.
In order to eliminate the need for Social Security numbers on
checks, AAFES is testing a new "Check Acceptance Process"
which will, if implemented, be used on both Fort Stewart and
Hunter Army Airfield.
AAFES set up the process into three phases, two of which are
testing phases. The third phase will be implementation of the
process.
The first phase began in November 2000 as a pilot "proof of
concept" test conducted at five military installations.
Presently, AAFES bank tellers enter the social security num-
bers of the person who sponsors the check. Under the new sys-
tem, the Social Security number is taken off the sponsor's mili-
tary I.D. card, and the social security number will not be required
on their check.
Coded numbers at the bottom of the check will be read by
high-tech scanners, which will then read the routing number,
account number and check number. Cashiers will no longer key-
punch information individually.
"I envision that there will be less of a chance of error and it
might even expedite getting checks through the clearing houses,"
said Tom Lisiecki, AAFES general manager for Fort
Stewart/Hunter Army Airfield. "I can't say that it will speed up
the process as a whole, but it will certainly help to eliminate any
misrouting of checks."
The second phase of testing began in early February at
exchanges in San Antonio, Texas and ended last Wednesday.
If the program is deemed a success, according to Bailey,
exchanges world-wide may be using the AAFES "Check
Acceptance Test" by early April.
"I believe this is the wave of the future," said Lisiecki. "It's
something that we'll want to put out there that will let the cus-
tomers, soldiers and their families know that we at AAFES are
concerned about their privacy. We already have safeguards for
shoppers on our websites and systems in place to protect their
identities so I think this new process is a sign of the times that we
need to transition to and our customers will appreciate that we're
making an effort to protect their identity."
Soldiers said they had mixed feelings about the new check-
cashing procedure.
"It'll be a lot better than what we're doing now," said Sgt.
Gerald Hatcher, a Company B, 159th Aviation Regiment power
plant repairman. "If you lose a check with your social on it,
somebody's got you and they can basically do whatever they
want with your life. This would definitely be a great thing if they
go along with it."
"It's pretty trivial bbut putting your social on a check does open
up a lot of risks," said Sgt. Rodney Hecker, a Company C, 3rd
Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment avionics
specialist. "However, it doesn't really matter that much to me."DRUNKI DURING DOSNT'JUST KILL DRUNK( DRIVERS.
