Preservation
Action News
by Frances James
The Preservation Action Committee
of the Historic Preservation League has
been very active these last two months.
After attempts to save the tunnels
under the Santa Fe complex proved
ineffective, the Historic Preservation
League called a meeting of concerned
citizens, and through our executive
committee, decided to take a stand at
Dallas City Council.
The Cultural Resource Inventory of
the Central Business District, which
had been compiled and published by the
League in 1980, was the source of the
City of Dallas Category List. Of this
original list of 316 structures eligible for
designation, 45 percent were already
demolished. This appalling destruction
of the core of the Dallas business district
caused the City Council to take notice
and pass a 90-day moratorium on
demolition permits, while the AIA
Historic Resources Subcommittee and
the League could re-evaluate the re-
maining structures.
There remains much work to be done
to appropriately explain to the Planning
Commission and the Council the
League's position. Some ordinance
changes may be necessary to correct the
current policy.
The Landmark Commission, Lovers
of Landmarks, AIA Historic Resources
Subcommittee and the League have
joined together to encourage the pres-
ervation of the Central Business Dis-
trict. The downturn in the economy, the
overabundance of new office buildings,
a proposed revitalization of retail
shopping and DART proposals will
affect the future of structures in the
Central Business District. We want to
be sure that preservation is a top
priority in the decision-making process.
IWhere Is If.Toast Crumbs Left
There are some crumbs left from the
Toast to Texas: A few places are still
available on two of the Dallas tours. If
you missed 'em at the auction, now's
your chance.

and Virginia McAlester on May 14 from
2:00 to 6:00 p.m. The tour will be
followed by a wine and cheese party at
Jim and CeCe McElwain's gorgeous
house on the hill in Oak Cliff. Only four
places remaining; $25 a person.
The Legends of Harwood Street:
walking tour of downtown. Hosted by
Mary Holly Rose. The schedule was
uncertain at press time, but it will be
scheduled toward the end of May. 12
spaces remaining at $10 per person.

Dallas To Get
Marker
A dedication ceremony for the Texas
Historical Marker for the City of Dallas
will be held on Friday, May 6, 1988, at
2:00 p.m..Mayor Annette Strauss and
County Judge Lee Jackson, as well as
other elected officials, are expected to
participate in this event. Details were
pending at press time. For more infor-

Clippers Needed
The Historic Preservation League
needs to hear from members who would
be willing to regularly watch for and
clip articles, columns or photographs in
which the League is mentioned from
magazines and newspapers you usually
read. The two major Dallas newspapers
are already pretty well covered, but we
need help spotting and clipping men-
tions in such publications as the Dallas
Downtown News, the Dallas Observer, D
Magazine and Texas Monthly, or any
other publication in which our name
appears. Please call the League office,

Where is this elaborate light fix-
ture? If you are the first person to call
the League office at 821-3290 with
the name of the building it adorns, you
will win a City of Dallas Landmark
keyring. Alas, although one reader
was in the right (ball) park, no one
identified the shell motif in the last
issue as being attached to the Dallas
Museum of Natural History building
at Fair Park.
