The observance of National Newspaper Week in Oc-
tober should make every American proud of the privilege
guaranteed by our Constitution to say and to write what
-we think, within the reasonable bounds of the libel laws.
This right is of recent origin in the hisfory of mankind
and was won bv‘ courage and sacrifice. Men have died in
defense of their right and their duty a? they saw it to write
and print the truth as they felt it in their hearts. For
centuries; rulers and dictators of church and state denied
men the right to express their opinions. For the fress
press is the end of tyranny. As Wendell Phillips said:
“What gunpowder did for war. the printing press has done
for the mind; the statesman is no longer clad in’the steel
of special education, but every reading man itj/his judge."
