Labels must be accurate and
clear to meet the requirements
of the Meat Inspection Act
They are approved by the Con-
sumer and Marketing Service-
the U. S. Department of Agri-
culture agency handling the
meat inspection service.
Here are some of the labels
you see often and what they
mean.
“Country Style” has special
meaning and can be used only
to describe ham which has been
rubbed with a cure mixture
containing salt and sugar and
placed in a container for at
ket, it can be labeled as being
“new” for a period of only six
months.
“Veal Leg for Cutlets” is a
label which can be used only
to describe a product that is de-
rived from the veal round. .
The federal inspection mark,
a circle around the phrase,
Inspected for Wholesomeness
by the U. S. Department of Ag-
riculture,” must be printed on
cartons and similar containers
to assure uniformity and legibil-
. Applying the mark by hand
is permitted only for identifica-
tion and import inspection
where printing is impractical.
