TAATIE DAFFAN NOT TO BRING
NATIONAL POLITICS IN RACE
Austin, August 8.—Selection of the
-democratic nominee for president in
1932, “will not be and should not be
na direct issue” in the 1930 campaign,
Miss Katie Daffan of Ennis, candi-
date for governor, told Mrs. Claude
Be Van Watts of Austin, president
of the' state Woman’s Christian Tem-
perance Union in reply to a question-
naire sent all gubernatorial aspirants.
She is opposed to barring from the
1930 primaries anyone—candidate or
-sroter—who did not support the party
presidential choice.
“It is not necessary, as I see it,
*g discuss the democratic nominee for
©resident in 1932, other than to say
that I will favor for president, and
dfar every other office, a candidate who
unequivocally stands for the main-
tenance of all prohibition laws,” she
stated.
She said she opposed control of the
democratic party by “any individual
anywhere, or by any group of individ-
uals anywhere.”
iShe- favored removal from the sta-
toates “what is left of the rule of
-evidence law passed in 1925.” This

She declared in favor of. “the exer-
cise of the individual right of con-

GENTLEMEN ALL
(Philadelphia Public Ledger)
According to a Harry Doremus—
who is said to have been one of “Scar-
face Al” Capone’s lieutenants in his
beer running racket in Florida—the
successful gangster must be first, last
and all the time a perfect gentleman.
Capone himself, it appears, would dis-
dain to have dealings with any but
those who are, in the truest sense of
the word, aristocrats. “Capone hires
nothing but gentlemen,” Doremus
said. “They must be well dressed at
all times; they must always say,
‘Yes, sir,’ and ‘No, sir,’ to Capone
when he addresses them.”
But this is not all. They must also
have cultured accents. Capone, in fact,!
PSYCHOLOGY TEST RELIEVES
GIRL WITH HICCOUGHS
Memphis, Tennessee, August 9.—A
simple experiment in psychology to-
day relieved Miss Vera Stone, 18, of
hiccoughs that had tortured her for
59 days.
When remedy after remedy failed
her physician decided to attack the
malady as a psychological problem.
The new and successful theory was
this: Miss Stone had hiccoughed so
long that, to her, hiccoughs had be-
come a normal element in her life.
Hysteria induced by the continued
strain had made her incapable of con-
ceiving she could recover.
SLOW DOWN ON HIGHWAY
Dallas, Texas, August 9.—Correct-
ing a general misunderstanding that
the new state highway limit of 45
miles an hour is now in effect, Rep-
resentative George C. Purl, Dallas
county, said today the law raising
the limit for pleasure cars from 35
to 45 miles an hour does not go into
effect until October 1.
The law was enacted by the sec-
ond called session of the legislature,
and also places a speed limit of 20
miles an hour within the area of
city, towns and villages, unincor-
porated as well as incorporated.

NEW GAME LAW BOON TO DOVES
Austin, Texas, August 8.—City
hunters who get their birds along
public highways have a big disap-
pointment coming to them with the
beginning of this season, for no more
can they shoot alorfe the highways.
The second called session of the last
Legislature enacted one of the short-
est laws on record but it went
straight to the point. Here is the
way it reads:
“Any person who shoots or dis
charges any gun, pistol or firearm in,
on, along, or across any public road
shall be fined not more than $100.
The first effect of the new law
will be to save the doves, which
have a tantalizing habit of sitting on
wires, fence posts and dead trees
along the highways. They have been
easy targets for hunters in past years
and many have obtained the limit
by that kind of hunting. Hereafter
it will be necessary to hunt away from
public roads, either on private lands
or unposted stream banks and low-
lands.
It was not the original purpose of
this law to protect either the doves
or the highway users. Its first ob-
ject was to stop poachers in pas-
tures for deer and turkey shooting.
This had become a favorite method of
killing game in some of the best pro-
tected pastures. Hunters would drag
along the public highways and eith-
er shoot deer or turkeys from the
road or use the road as a basic point
to make quiet encroachments into
the 'large pastures. They often would
say they had wounded the animal or
turkey along the highway and were
merely chasing it.
