m stock, the quan-
tity and quality of meat animal*
will rapidly decline. Since the
government fixed the price that
farmers receive for thetr aril-
fria'la, the tupply ha* decreased
about one-fourth. Meanwhile
blackmarketing of beef flourithea
at price* almost three time* the
official retail price fixed-by. gov-
ernment.
The only reitoaining step left
to government in it* effort to
solve the .meat criti* in Braxil it
to tfy to-ifprce the farmers to
raise more-cattle. This has been
tried again and again but has
never proved Successful Short of
complete slavery, men cannot be
forced to produce and sell- meat
or anything else below cost Even
though enslaved, men cannot for
leng continue to produce at-.less
than cost ^
Price fixing of meat or other
commodities and government op-
eration of packing plants and
other industries will not produce
abundance but only more strin-
gent shortages. We have seen
this trie 1 and have seen it* fail
in counrry after country through-
out the world. It most assuredly
will fail in Brazil as it haa re-
cently in Poland.
Give men the hope of reward
and they will work hard and
produce abundantly. Try to force
them at slaves and the result will
be scarcity and.great suffering
The only answer To the prob-
lem is the restoration of the free
market wherein the want* and
denies of the people'arc allowed
to channel capital; labor and raw
material* into the making of the
goods and the rendering of the
services which the pkiple most
desire-' and for which they ara
ready, willing and able to pay.
That is the only road to pros-
perity.- ■ . i t
