Ice-Age Horse
Bones Found
/
Rockport -(AP)- Bones be-
lieved those of a prehistoric
horse have been unearthed dur-
ing the developemenj of Key
Allegro, a Florida - type
subdivision between Rockport
and Fulton, formerly known as
Frandollg Island and now owned
by Carl C. Krueger Jr. and
associates of San Antonio.
The discovery 7 came when
Vermillion 'Construction Co.
bulldozers moved In to level the
Island preparatory to filling It
and dredging canals.
Chuck Vermillion said, "We
thought at first that It was pro-
bably a horse or cow that had
been drowned. But a visitor,
Tfoy Grant of Corpus Chrlstl,
became Interested, and took one
ot the bones to Aalbert (correct^
Heine, director and curator of
the Corpus Christ! Museum.
Heine tentatively ldehtlfled it as
a fossilized bone from one of the
horses that were so plentiful In
. this part of the world about the
time of the last Ice Age."
Heine, contacted by tele-
phone, said, "My preliminary
conclusion Is that they are Ple-
istocene teeth from the last Ice
Age, and could be anywhere
from about 6,000 to a million
years ol<k
"At first sight, some of the
teeth look like horse teeth. The
horse originated In North Am-
erica, and there were many
kinds, ranging In size from little
ones as small as a Shetland
pony to some that were even
larger than the greatest draft
horses of today.
"Horses migrated from
America via Alaska and the land
bridge that used to cross Bering
Strait and connect with Asia.
Horses finally became extinct
In this country, although there
are some places In Texas where
tbe geological formations are
called the Equus Beds because
of the great number of horse
bones found thsrs. »
"Those that we have In'this
country wars finally brought
back to Amsrica by Uis
Spanish," Halna said.
