The Anauat
streets shows
cotton report to Brad
prosress of the crop
from July 21 to August 21 the average
date of the mall repllos The previous
report indicated that the eastern hall of
the bolt had had almost a monopoly of
bad weather conditions while on the
contrary the southwest reported an ex
actly opposlto stato of affairs Attention
was called to the dissimilarity of the
weather
prevailing in the two sections
end It was shown that while tuo East
owing to continued rains had earned the
name of the wet belt the more wester
ly states wcro onjojlog an almost unin
terrupted period of seasonable weather
Late dispatches however indicated that
a change was just then occurring the
consequence of which would be shown
In the August report
The effect of these changes has now be
come apparent and the consequences aro
found in the lowering of tho crop condi
tion in the southwest while In tho East
particularly tho Carollnas the crop has
gained considerably Tho reason assigned
for this marked decline and advanco re-
spectively is to bo found In tho generally
hot and dry weather which has rulod
throughout August This while favorable
to tho further development of the plant In
tho eastern half of tho belt was detri-
mental to the cotton further west
In tho comparative summary table
given herewith the nature of tho weather
during August Is shown In addition the
general crop prospects as viewed by the
correspondents on August 21 are given
with like figures for 188S and 1884 The
details by states are also shown with
comparisons and It Is safe to say that the
record thus made coming as it does from
the same sources as in previous years
willfully repay the attention bestowed
on It
The prospects on August 21 wcro not
so favorable for tho gathering of an aver
ago crop as they were at the same time
last year except In tho Carollnas Flor-
ida Arkansas and Tennessee The late-
ness of the present season however
makes tho ultlmato outturn liable as the
crop 1b to great and sudden changes a
matter ot some doubt The late date of
picking as compared with last year Is
shown by tho summary table The de-
tails as to states show that the warm dry
weather following a season of abundant
moisture was Instrumental In causing a
favorable change In the Carolldas Geor-
gia Florida and Alabama from all ot
whom a fair report comes In Missis-
sippi also crop conditions aro fair while
In Tennessee they aro almost good In
Texas the drought had the effect of lower
lag greatly the prospects ot tho crop and
they aro placed now as less favorable
than those at tho like period last
year From Louisiana and Ar
kansas a moro favorable report
comes than from Texas the rullng
conditions practically being similar only
with less intensity Tho usual accom
paniment of dry hot weather shedding
and rust are present to a great degree In
Texas and to a correspondingly less de
gree in the other states mentioned The
rapid recuperation shown In the eastern
half of the belt from the effects of tho bad
condition previously ruling was In many
cases a matter ot surprise No doubt
much ground was lost In the wet belt1
this year but It is a matter ot test that
tho crop in this bcctlon Is now In a better
condition comparatively speaking than
it is in the section which was not thus
troubled As was shown by Bradstrects
last report the effects caused by
abundance of rain are much easier to
overcome than If the opposlto were tho
case
Late telegraphic dispatches show that
tho weather In thc outh with tho excep-
tion ot Georgia and Arkansas Is hob and
dry In those rftates seasonable rains
aro reported and In the latter state
especially are calculated to Improve
crop prospects
