JOE BAILEY.
Watchman t
In vtn# of the foot that you
have stated that the friends and
anemias alike of Senator Bailey
may oome into your oaper with a
reasonable and honorable argu*
ment of the Bailey question, and
in further considering that the
prevailing opinion is and hae
been proclaimed broadcast over
the oounty and State that we are
all down here, “In the woods,"
lined up against that tried son of
democracy and learned Senator,
Joeeph Weldon Bailey, I can not
refrain entering a general denial
for at least a part of our popu*
lace, and thereby let the world
Carthage and Panola oounty who
have weighed this matter thor-
oughly and wilt not allow such
assertions to go unohtllenged.
There are two sides to every
questions and If we only study
one elds we, of oourse, are not
qualified te pass upon the other.
People generally believe as they
are taught, and to say that -the
with its termini in
Tenneese*, end seeking favors
before the legislature of that
State only. They will tell you
that he borrowed money from H
C. Pierce on flret sight, but they
wMi not explain to you that Sen
ator Bailey was on his way to
Tenneeeee to eell oft some of his
stook In order to raise money
that he needed, and that H. C.
Pierce, knowing hi* commercial
rating, knowing his political
standing and honesty as a man,
agreed to loan him the money if
he would return to Texas and get
him a legitimate hearing before
the State department. They will
not tell you that Mr. Bailey paid
know that there ait jjgjsns of sent of this borrowed mon*
people of Panola oounty and East
Texas have been taught both
sides of the Bailey question is
absurd. Our people nearly alt
read daily papers that are antag*
onistio to Senator Bailey, and
have from the very beginning
fought him in a most unfair man*
ner. They have given print to
everything and from every nod y
that would reflect upon his char-
acter and integrity as a man and
office holder, and in every way
have tried to impair his useful-
ness in our national congress.
To be consistent and fair, why
not take up both sides of this
question and give an intelligent
hearing? Why do the anti-Bail-
sy people continually assert that
Senator Bailey is corrupt and
guilty of all these crimes without
producing some argument to back
Up their assertions? The people
believe In abiolute proof end to
merely eay a thing is so does not
make It so,
Now then, they will tell you
that Bailey picked up and brought
back Into Texas a defeated and
crippled trust, in the shape ol the
Waters-Pierce OH company, and
fastened monopoly and greed
upon the people, but they dare
not review the actual oiroum*
stance* of the transaction; they
will tell you that Bailey received
money from H. C. Pierce, but
tb«y will not let you know that it
was for services se a lawyer and
in aomfsetion with the Tenneeeee
railroad properties; nil of which
ae n lawyer and ns a senator be
had a perfect right to do, for this
company Is not a public service
corporation seeking favors before
congress, but a public service
ay baok and that It was so proven
before the investigating commit*
tan at Austin.
They will tell you that ha went
to Austin and practised influence
before the State officials, and
with the anti* Bailey leaders as
lookers-on, thereby impugning
the character of Mr. Bailey, the
State officials and themselves as

sonal opinion in tbs matter; Bai-
Isyism means. If you can't vote

your ofllo* and hand your oharga

was a big, important matter and
I don’t bslisva my people under*

say It you lat it go at that every
time they want to vote against
the people it will be “a big,
important matter." Hawkins
thought his people didn't know
what they wanted either, but be
soon found out they did, and
now he has been retired to ah
easy seat. However, in resign-
ing his offioe to run over again
on tha Anti-Ballsy .tjokst he act-
ed all the more honorable; Bai*
isyism stands for honesty in ev-
ery phase and proof of all asser-
tions. Facts, not heressy and
abuse, make the basin t.I sound
well, but they will not relate to
you that upon reeding the ouster
dooument Mr. Bailey turned to
Pieros and said, “Sir, under this
dooument your oompany is ousted
from our State and if you want
to do business here you must re-
organize, come baok into our
midst with clean hands and do
business according to our laws,"
end further, that these same laws
required and made it mandatory
upon the Secretary of State to
grant them a permit in the event
they did reorganize and ask for
the esme. All of this was done
end they will not tell you that
Mr. Bailey had nothing whatever
to do with the granting of this
permit and was in Washington
attending his duties at the time.
So you see, they give only one
side of the question and while
this brainy and fearless senator
strives to do his duty and while
the whole world looks end while
looking marvels at the mental
capacity and worth of our great
•talesman, they are throwing
great balls of hate and abuse at
him, and yet claiming to fight
Baileyism and not Bailey. Sep-
arate them, if you can, and we
will have no fight, because the
ism will fit any kind of politics.
They say they are fighting
Baileyism; all right, and ws will
give our definition of Baileyism
and we wager they will quit the
fight because Baileyism has never
stood for anything they stand
for. We will show what Bailey-
argument. You can't suggest
having anything or submit any
question to the people, but what
the Anti-Bailey leaders don't see
some big organized effort on foot
to praise Senator Bailey behind
the whole eoheme and absolutely
refuse to have anything to do
with any proposition of enter-
prise with the Bailey men pres-
ent, on the ground that Dailey's
followers will lead them astray.
All of which is equivalent to
eayingt “The Bailey men give
contradiction to our rumors and
hearessy by facts and we are not
able to meet these facts.’’ Now,
isn't this a fact? They claim
more for the Bailey men than
they do for themselves. State
Senator Senter, one of these
leaders, has publicly declared,
that it would be Impossible for
him to look into the proposition
of allowing the people to vote
upon an amendment to the con-
stitution prohibiting the sale of
whiskey in our state, and all be-
cause of his fight on Mr. Bailey.
This means that be can only do
one thing at a time and that is to
bats and abuse a United States
Senator.
You will notice they do not
even suggeet who Mr. Bailey's
opponent will be when the time
oomee, and 1 am of the opinion
the whole ehebang will run be-
cause they are all after the pie.
Now, the latest action of the
Anti-Baileyltes ie to c(aim that

In mllllqery we believe our line will surpass anything ever
before shown In Carthage, and this Is saying much, for Car*
thage always leads other towns In this line. Our millinery
department this year will be under the management of Miss
Nettie Hobbs, of Lufkin, Texas. Miss Hobbs Is a milliner of
long experience, and her ideas are the latest creations of the
1908*09 modes. $he will be pleased to have the ladles call on
her In her department. She will spare no expense, either In
design or fabrics, to make her first season in Carthage a suc-
