with the excellent qualities of our cool and
delicious Soda Water. Our fountains are
busy giving cool relief to the thirsty, and
every glass is but an appetizer for another.
We use only the purest water and the
purest flavorings—these so varied as to
suit all tasts, and the result is that our
Soda is the talk of the town. As a “re-
fresher,” you never tasted its equal, as a
single trial will convince you.

pass to the Second Annual Fair
to be held at Carthage Septem-
ber 21-24.
The Carthage fnir is the first
of a chain of fairs in East Texas,
and Timpson’s is the second;
Nacogdoches follows with the
third and Lufkin with the fourth.
What is said of one may be
said of another. The promoters
are straining every nerve to make
this year’s fair twice as good as
its predecessor.
The fair grounds and race
track at Carthage are being put
in good condition, and horses
from Shreveport and other places
are now in training.
The Boy’s Corn Club display
will be one around which great
interest will center. The depart-
ment presided over by the women
is receiving many new entries
daily.
A program has been prepared
for both day and night. Speak-
ers of State and National import-
ance will deliver addresses upon
subjects of interest to the farmer
Education, Good Roads. Progres-
sive Methods of Farming. Stock
Raising, Country and Town De-
velopement. Civics, etc. A num-
ber of free attractions will be
given on the grounds during the
day. and half a dozen or more
good shows of different kinds
will be on the grounds.
A mammoth parade of business
men and farmers will draw thou-
sands there on the opening day,

A Ward About the Schools.
It is a mistake to teach chil-
dren a little of everything and
nothing thoroughly. About all
education can do for a man or
boy is to set him thinking for
himself. The germ of originali-
ty in the individual needs culti-
vation, needs stimulant. The
head cramped with other peo-
ple’s ideas has little room for its
own thought. Many a boy is so
thoroughly schooled that the
common sense, the will power,
the self reliant manho d, is
driven out of him. A load of
facts with no education in their
use is of little value. The most
successful business men in our
cities are those whose scanty ed-
ucation embraced a thorough
knowledge of simple rules and
studies, but whose necessities
have since demaned vigorous
thought, incessant industry and
the best use ot every resource of
mind and body. The hotbed sys-
tem of education enfeebles rather
than strengthens. Only a few
require the classics, astronomy
or a knowledge of the dead lan-
guages.
