The jolly big Col H T Kecnnn general

over the amount of cattle that have gone

are shipping to Chicago possibly because
of exceptionally good service and quick

Trouble on the Denver
A heavy storm was reported in the Pan-
handle yesterday and the track of the
Fort Worth and Denver is again washed
out this timo between Amarillo and Tex
line Owing to the storm and the conse
quent bad working of the wires nothing
definite could be learned as to the extent of
the damage done It is feared the Cana-
dian river bridge may have gone out and if
this Is the case the Denver has lost nearly
all the expensive iron bridges on the line
in Texas Some trains of stock were
caught by the washouts which will doubt-
less add considerably to the amount of loss
The Denver seems to be playing in ex-
ceptionally hard luck this season having
suffered more from Storms than any of the
Texas lines A peculiarity of this is that
the washouts and damage from rain have
occurred in a section of country heretofore
considered as beyond th c rain belt and
which people have so often been told suffer
from want of rain If the Canadian bridge
is all right there will be little delay to
traffic

The Alton Again a Disturber
Special to the Gazette
New Yokk June 13 It is possible the
Alton will withdraw from the Western
passenger association this week and the
management has decided that if it does this
it will get out of all such organizations and
stay out The moment it finds itself free
from restraint except the interstate com-
merce law interferes it will make a rate
low enough to equalize any disadvantage
that it is placed under by the boycott A
two cents per mile rate on its entire lino
will possibly be its first move This will
necessarily force the adoption ofi the same
rate throughout Illinois North Missouri
Iowa and through competition between dif
ferent localities the two cent rate cannot be
kept out of Southern Minnesota and the
lower half of Wisconsin The Alton
threatens to play as much havoc in freicht
as in passenger rates It has firmly decided
not to obey the order of Chairman Midglev
shutting off the present divisions of through
rates with Indiana Illinois and Iowa and
a lively fight over the matter will start on
Monday

Finlcy and the Alton
Chicago III June 13 Chairman Fin
ley and the management of the Chicago and
Alton cannot agree on the question of the
Altons liabilities under agreement for re-
fusing to restore passenger rates between
Kansas City and St Louis and St Louis
and Chicago Mr Finley made a draft on
the Alton for the amount of the fine im-
posed by him and sent it to
the bank The draft failed to re-
ceive the frequired indorsement and was
not paid This leaves the chairman with
nothing further to do but to notify the
other members of the Altons attitude and
wait their pleasure But trouble is not so
likely to grow out of this situation as it is
out of Chairman Finleys latest decision by
which he authorizes the Atchison and other
lines to establish summer tourist rates
from Kansas City to Eastern points by is-
suing through tickets by way of Chicago at
a rate equal to the sum of locals by way of
St Louis In doing this the chairman re-
plied to the Altons threat by giving a slap
in the face Alton urged that equality
could be obtained only by a reduction iu the
round trip rate between Kansas City and
Chicago and that the fact of a boycott sale
of through tickets to Eastern points and re-
turn at reduced rates would place
the Alton at a disadvantage The chair-
man saw fit to brush the argument
aside and he has bqen notified by the Alton
people that as a measure of selfprotection
they will at once reduce the roundtrip rate
between Kansas City and Chicago suffici-
ently to put their road on an equal footing
with its competitors

Special to the Gazette
Dallas Tex June 15 This morning J
F Lee an od darkey came to town from
his home near Bales school house and told
the following to Justice Ed Lauderdale
Saturday evening late a well dressed
young lady and gentleman drove up to his
house and borrowed a hoe with which to
dig some fish bait so they said The hoe
was loaned them and after about one
half hour it was returned Then the
couple drove rapidly away toward Dallas
Lee and his wife mistrusted that all
was not straight with thecouple and
started an investigation Lee called in his
white neighbor Dick Lag and the two
went down the creek in the direction the
young couplo had gone after borrowing the
hoe A search revealed a spot where the
dirt had been recently disturbed and the
men began to dig On going down about
two feet they came to some clothing Con-
vinced that something was wrong they
suspended operations and notified the
officials here Justice Lauderdale and
Dr Schofield went to the scene of the
find this morning and unearthed a well
developed white child which could not have
been over a day old when buried The
affair is shrouded in mystery and the
officers have the matter under investiga-
tion They have a good description of the
couplo that made the Saturday evening
call and something sensational may turn
up yet
Later It is reported late this evening
that the man in the case has been appre-
hended and that the woman is being looked
for The parties are said to bo unmarried
and are away up in the world

First of the Season
Some quick work in the purchasing and
marketingof wheat has been done by the
11 Grain company On last Thurs
hey bought aud shipped to Dallas from
Grand Prairie two carloads of wheat This
wheat was run through the elevator and
thoroughly cleaned on Friday forenoon
At 230 p m the same day the two cars left
Dallas via the Missouri Kansas and Texas
railroad one bound for St Louis and the
other For Chicago A telegram from Par-
sons Kan sent Saturday at 2 p m an
nouncedthe arrival in that city of the two
cars of Texas wheat they having been on
the road only twentyfour hours Tho
telegram also stated that tho cars had been
forwarded at once and that one of them
would reach St Louis on Saturday night
without fail while tho other would reach
its destination at Chicago on Sunday
evening Both these cars would
be on the general market bright
and early this morning and being
the first cars of the Texas wheat crop of
IS I ought to bring a fine price
This afternoon the Cockrell grain com-
pany received a telegram from St Louis
stating that their carload of wheat had ar-
rived and had been sold the price obtained
being 8103 per bushel or 10 cents a
bushel above the market price This com-
pany can feel jusUy proud of their enter-
prise in this shipment and of the great re-
turns brought by it
To Close Sunday

mained open on Sunday without any re-

in front of tho Thomson house It contained
a youg lady and gentleman who registered

county After breakfast the young gent
made his way to the courthouse aud the
fir3t persons he met were Messrs Howard
Martin and Abe Lisk in the hall of the
building whom he asked if it was against
the law to marry a girl in this county who
lives in another county He was told by
the young gentlemen that it was not Ho
then made inquiry as to whether or not a
man had to give bond The young gentle
men thought it a good opportunity to have
a little fun out of the prospective bride-
groom and told him that he would
be required to give bond and in this county
the bond required was very large the least
being > 000 The young man said he was
not acquainted with any one here but he
would try and make tho required bond
After he had been out for some time he
found his way into tho countj clerks office
and stated that he was unable to make the
85000 bond for the license and asked if
there was not some other way to get the
document to make a feller a married man
Mr Hodges one of t ho deputies told him
that as ho was a stranger he would issue
the license if he would make affidavit that
the young lady was eighteen years old Ho
eagerly made the oath and obtained the
muchdesired pai > ers Tho young man then
asked if the county clerk could not perform
the ceremony When told not he entreated
County Clerk Akard to get a preacher for
him Mr Akard suspecting from the
young mans appearance which was plainly
visible that he had tanked up pretty
well for the occasion to steady his nerves
he gavo him a small lecture about getting
in such a condition for such an occasion
and under the circumstances declined to
find a minister on account of his condition
Some of the boys about the courthouse for
a little fun wrote a note without signing
any name to Mr Smith saying Mr Parks
the girls father had Just arrived in the
city and that he was quite wrathy and was
hunting Smith On the receipt of this
note Mr Smith struck a trot for Rev Mr
Carnes who lives only two blocks from the
hotel and within a very short time ho had
returned with the minister and was mar-
ried in tho hotel parlors in the presence of
tho family of Mr Thomson some traveling
men and TnE Gazette correspondent as

from the newly married man that bothot
them lived in Hood county and that the father
of the girl objected to the marrying and
that late yesterday evening they made way
from the old gents place and traveled ail
night for this place
He says they will remain here two or

does not expect any ill treatment when he
