when the snow was going off rapidly It
w as rather warm for the season and very
sloppy and muddy Near the top of the
hill I noticed a bear track which I knew
had been made the night before and fol-
lowed it until I saw where it entered into
a cave or cleft in the rocks From the gen-
eral nature of the ground I knew that the
nolo was not deep so 1 determined to smoke
the old fellow out I built a file at the
mouth of the hole and it had barely got to
gotig before a big cinnamon beJr came
rushing out and knocked me over as he ran

him as he ran but while doing this another
hear came out of the hole and almost ran

running off as the other did he havo light

to give up from exhaustion I had haidly

back looking for a light also I tried to get
my gun out he was en me bofoic I could
reach it I made a desperate slash for his
throat and thu as he took my left arm be-

lime has been a growing independence
among theMinng ladies and at a small

of equal i iglits was discussed bv the young

which thej had to acknowledge the su-

and marriage being specially referred to
ThwJit iiist was a poser for the ladies
but Mis Kill Smith said she thought she
had as much light to go courting as a man
had and if she w anted to marry a man she
would ask him The matter was looked
upon as a joke but a few dajs afterwards
the joung lady made good her assertion by
calling upon alter Tillin and after a brief

was one of the most desirable oung ladies
of the tow n she was eagerlj accepted by the
forlunate young man and the wedding came

Deaij Sir In your favor of June 21 you
ask substantially In regard to the separ-
ate coach law enacted by the Twentysec
ond legislature where a sheriff has in cus-
tody one or more negro prisoners and de-
sires to transfer them on the railroad what
action should the sheriff or peaco officers
take in regard to the separation of tho races
You are respectfully advised that the
sheriff should place a negro prisoner in the
coach provided for negroes and guard him
or have him guarded there If a white
prisoner is in custody he should be placed
in the coach provided for the whites The
legislature did not intend to prohibit a
sheriff from conveying and guarding a ne-
gro prisoner in the negro coach It did not
intend to make it a criminal offense for the
sheriff in the discharge of his official duties
