Mr. Charles liiKlish,
Honhum, Texas.
Dear Charles: You asked me to
write you and give you an idea of
different parts of the State. It seems
to me those who live in F’annin county
should he proud of the faet. In trav-
elinjf over Texas one sees some fine
eountry, and no doubt would like to
live in some of these places if he hud
not previouay lived in Katin In county.
Most all scetions I have passed
through have had rains aplenty. In
the roast country, though, there has
been no rain since last September.
The cattle are all being shipped out
of the country around Victoria, Cor-
pus Christi, Brownsville, etc. I un
derstand that crops of all kinds have
been ruined.
Was in San Antonio the other dav.
Didn’t (jet there in time for the con-
vention, hut saw what I took to bn
the steam roller that was used dur-
ing the said convention. From read-
ing the proceedings of the convention
would judge this roller did the work
-icrording to plans and specifications.
Was in your town of Austin last
week. It is still there. The Driskill
Hotel, Capitol, E. M. Scarborough A-
Son, and the drui? store and soda
fount on the corner.
After you pass Waco Koine outH.
you heirin to sec where wheat and oat
have been harvested. The Krain look
nretty Rood. Corn looks fine, and
•oastinif cars are very much in evi-
dence on most all hotel tallies. I un
lerstand Ihe coons and squirrels have
thoroughly orjranir.ed and are gather
ing their part of the corn crop along
the creek bottoms in a very vigorous
and determined way. Cotton is rath
er late in all section I have been in. |
1 should judge from two to three |
weeks.
Believe me, the cotton around I.it
ling, Lockhart and Gonzales need
leaning out badly.
The crop of Mexicans scents to In-
rood. Lockhart has Mexicans, Con
'.ales has some more; Sabinal seem., to
be well stocked and Eagle Pas: is
'oaded and then some with these sunt -
oeople. All the towns along the hoi
ler are full to overflowing-—about like
the negroes are in towns in Mississip
oi and Louisiana. They seem to waul
-ittle and have less. Of course the
Mexicans have exaggerated ideas
about the impending trouble between
the United States and Mexico. Thev
-hink it would hr a one-sided affair,
all to Mexico's credit. They remind
me of a small child who thinks h1-
Pa is Ihe largest, smartest, best and
richest man in the world, and could
whip a cowpen full of other men, when
n reality he is “a small potato an-!
few in a hill."
Isiok here, Charlie, you have hern
telling me about the pretty Mexican
women. That, is a mistake. Don’t [
believe you know a good looking wo
1^11 when you see one Now, -o fat
as I am concerned. I have never seen |
good Inking Mexican- male or L-
male. If I don’t know good looking
women when I see them, no one don
I think most all the real good looking
women are in Bonham and Fannin J
county
Perhaps you didn’t know it was i
-ather warm here today inti is all. I
and a strong wind, hot enough to frv j
an egg in less than no time.
Lots of soldier boy* in this town,
they fill the cold drink stands and
places of amusement tjuite an im ,
pmvement in hotel conditions since
here last The Eagle is an up-to-dat-
hotel in appearance and especially i >
price The town is still somewhat d<-
pressed on account of the Mexican j
trouble, as it gets most of its trad*
from across the Rio Grande de Ittaxo
Will go from here to IVl Rio, A!
