ment as the dictatorship of a traitor

usually means a fight but under the
circumstances Diaz will have to con-
tent himself with chewing up a saucer

The Republican press everywhere is
copying every Democratic expression
it can find derogatory to Hill or favor-
able to Cleveland Why
The persistency with which Garza
eludes his pursuers tempts the belief
that like the mythical Mrs Harris
there aint no sich person

Abitter fight between Alliance men
in Kansas has just resulted in a victory
for the subtreasuryites and in tho
substitution of a subtreasury for an
anti delegation to the St Louis con-
vention The snake is scotched in

fiercely as when it pounced upon Mr

Congressman Otis of Kansas is the
author of a plan in the shape of a bill
to loan 2000000000 to the people
through the intervention of tho states
The trouble with the Alliance leaders
is that they are devoting too much
time to plans to loanmoney and too
little time to plans to enable the
farmer to put himself in a condition

Those peoplo in Texas some of
them at least who abuse Tammany do
not know that it has the best record
for straight Democratic voting of any
element or people in the Union not
excepting Texas That is why it is so
roundly abused If it could be exas-
perated into betrayal of the Demo-
cratic ticket the men whose only hope
of success lies in its loyalty would be
more sparing of their denunciation
Following closely upon the selecj
lion of Fort Worth as its Southwestern
headquarters by tho Walter A Woods

announcement that Warder Bushnell
Glessner of Chicago manufacturers

ers have also decided to make this

If any Democratic mother has a son
of whom she is foolish enough to wish
to make a politician she should begin

leather strap to him and apply it where

If tho proposal of Judge McEncry
for the withdrawal of both Democratic
tickets in Louisiana in tho interest of
harmony and for a new convention in
which all parties will join is refused
by tho Fosterites they will by that ac-
tion place themselves beyond the pale
of outside Democratic recognition and
respect The country has sympathized
with tho war upon the lottery but it
will bo quick to perceive and to resent
an attempt to throw the electoral vote
of Louisiana to tho Republicans to
gratify personal revenge
THE COMING MAN
Speaking of a presidential candidate
the Chicago Herald asks Where can
the Democrats of the Northwest find a
better man than Senator John M
Palmer We dont know that there
are any better men but are there
not men more available Senator
Palmer is a grand old man and if he
wero ten years younger would be a
formidable candidate His honesty
courage and capacity are unquestioned
but his years are too many It is pos-
sible that he might be able to com-
mand tho support of eight states in the
Northwest five of which towit Illi-
nois Michigan Wisconsin Iowa and
Nebraska went Democratic at the last
general election Minnesota and the
two Dakotas went Republican These
eight states will have 174 delegates out
of a total of 900 in the national Demo-
cratic convention If he or any other
Western man should get them all he
THE GAZETTE 3T WOETH TEXAS WEDNESDAY EEBEUAEY 10
would still be in a discouraging mi-
nority
Today there are but two Democrats
who arc much talked of as candidates
for Jhe presidency It is needless to
say hattheyareHill and Cleveland At
present It is by no means suro that Mr
Cleveland is really a candidate it hav-
ing been stated quite recently that
nothing but the earnest pleadings of
his friends prevented a public an-
nouncement of his withdrawal from the
race At best he can no longer be con-
sidered as anything more than a nomi-
nal candidate with no better show for
tho nomination than the darkest of
dark horses He is to all intents and
purposes out of tbe race while Hill
is to all intents and purposes very much
in it Hill should get the 174 dele-
gates mentioned above because his
financial andtariff policies are as one
with theirs Palmers policy may be
the same also but Hill cap carry tho
Eist while it is doubtful if Palmer or
any other Western man could Hill is
the coming man and let us keep it in
mind
what do they tuink of that
The real animus of the Murray Hill
bolt in New York is happily revealed
at last It is not due to personal re-
gard for Cleveland but to opposition
to tho silver views of Hill The Mur-
ray Hill bankers and brokers led by E
Ellery Anderson are determined that
no free silver president shall ever be
inaugurated if bulldozing can prevent
it and if they as a conglomerate mass
of mugwumps Republicans and condi-
tional Democrats can direct the Demo-
cratic nomination and afterwdrds vote
in tho Republican ticket why so much
to tho credit of their ingenuity The
New York Herald which opposes Hill
interviewed Bourko Cochran and J
Do Witt Warner as tho representatives
respectively of tho Hill and the Mur-
ray Hill elements Mr Warner was
candid enough He said
While I have never been a partisan of
Governor Hill I have on tho other hand
been unable to sympithizo with many of
the attacks made upon him which Indeed
it has seemed to me were sometimes invited
by acts which merited popular approval
and even thosemost opposed to him admit
that he Iras been a good business gov-
ernor So while there has never been a
time I did not prefer some other candidate
and was not confident that a majority of the
pirty in the state agreed w ith me yet until
his Eltnira speech I have always believed
and sajd that if nominated he could carry
New York state
That speech chanced au It was not so
much that he showed himself not id accord
with the sentiment of our state upon the
silver question but that his dalliance with
it showed him unacquainted with the im-
portance with which it was regarded
The effect was as if in a vt ell regulated
household a child should be found playing
with a can of dynamite or as if in South
Carolina a Democratic loader should refer
to tho force bill as something which had a
good many sides to it and might after all
bo a good thing for that state
Heretofore everyone in Now York had
assumed that the Democrats were as op-
posed ro freo coinage as the Itepublicans
The evidence that a man with so much title
to leadership as Govornor Hill considered
tho question as an open one cameltfce a
thunder cloud from a clear sky i
As to Senator Hills candidacy for the
Democratic presidential nomination that
ceased with his Elmira speech
So the purpose is to crucify Hill be-
cause of his free silver speech at
Elmira
What do Texas Democrats think of
that
VICTORY OR DEFEAT
Tbe CourierJournal mistakes the
position of THE Gazette and what we
understand to be the position of the au-
thors of the Democratic plan of cam-
paign in congress in assuming that it
is proposed to take a backward step in
the contest for a reformation of tho
tariff Our Louisville contemporary
is as inconsistent as it is illogical for
it lias been but a few days since it
pronounced in a terse sentence quoted
by The Gazette the clamor against
tho Democratic leaders in con-
gress as disloyal to the cause of tariff
reform to be mere quibbling It then
said and accurately too that the only
question involved was the best method
of assailing the enemy That such is
true must ajppear from a moments con-
sideration It is not possible in tho
timo that remains for campaign
preparation to formulate a bill fully
expressive of the principles of tariff
reform Indeed such a bill if per-
fected would be in the view of all ex-
cept the gibbering idiots who think
tho end of existence is to speak their
minds the very last thing to incorpo-
rate in a national platform Even Mr
Watterson with all his rash ardor
has givenapproval to the use of cau
tion He indorsed tho adoption of the
Mills bill in the platform of 18S3 yet
itis safe to say that tho only items qf
that bill which satisfied his demands
wero found on the free list The tariff
schedules were a caricature on re-
form considered in any other light
than that of expediency as the
CourierJournal will doubtless ad
mit If it is determined to accept
nothing lei > s than the whole loaf of
bread at the first call upon the bakery
it should hop out on tho floor with
Henry George and inaugurate an out and
outfight for free trade unhampered by
such conscienceless scruples as a desire
to win
It is one of the anomalies of history
that those who are most efficient in ag-
itation which leads to reform ulti-
mately become obstacles to its accom-
plishment Unabated enthusiasm
wears away judgment and at last it re-
quires tho stocks to keep the poor zeal-
ots from injuring the cause for which
they have forsaken reason It was so
with the slavery agitation It has
been so with all great reform issues at
all times in all places We regret

Mr Gladstone is generally accepted

modern statesmanship He had well
nigh won the fight for home rule in

volted from his leadership because he
would not disclose to the country the
dctaite of Ids plan of selfgovernment
and thus invite a storm of petty criti-
cism upon the more machinery of a

should seriously consider the question
which is now forced upon thenv and take
care to select cautiously their delegates to
the national convention So it is
with Mr Cleveland He cannot withdraw
with honor to himself If ho regards Mr
Hill as it is safe to say he does as a drn
gerous man and one who should not be ele-
vated to the presidency such a course
would be a cowardly ono and would hurt
him far more than a defeat in the national
convention If Mr Cloveland is in tho
hands of his friends he should stay there
and abide patiently the result

There is an old saying which is ineffect
that nothing succeeds like success and we
always judge mans d greatness by his suc-
cesses and not by hisfallures This boing
the case we can but look upon Senator Hill
as a great man as his record shows him to
be successful in everything ho has so far
attempted Being schooled in politics by
so great a teacher as Samuel J Tilden he
naturally adhered to the Democratic faith
and te promote the interests of his party
has been his chief aim In its promotion
he has grown into great prominence him1
self and today he is more generally talked
of for the presidency on the Democratic
ticket than any other man in the United
States As governor of New York he
proved himself a wise careful and
judicious executive and made a record that
will alwajs redound to his credit Boldly
aggressive he has never failed to go where
his party called and it was more through
his personal efforts than anything else that
McKinley was defeated in his own district
a year ago last falL The only charge his
enemies bring against him is that he is a
shrewd politician Instead of this beine
against him however it should be to bis
credit for in t ese roaring times of deal
and steal we want a man capable of heading
off trickery and one that is fully competent
to play checkers with tha shrewd Republi-

own way David Bennett Hill is that man
and of all tho presidential possibilities so
far named by the Democratic party he is at
