By United Press.
El Paso, Texas, June 22.—Forty Americans killed,
many wounded and seventeen captured is the result of the
clash between Carranza forces at C’arrizal, near Villa Abu-
mudu, and United States troops. The Mexican losses are
reported twice as heavy.
The Americans were lured into amliush by a flag of
truce. Five hundred of the Tenth Cavalry (colored) and
several thousand Mexicans were engaged. The Americans
retired.
General Pershing reports having seized Casus Grandes
and Nuevo Casus Grandes.
The Mexicans are preparing to evacuate Juarez and all
other border towns.
The Mexicans are evacuating Juarez. Before dawn
two trains had started south, loaded with soldiers and civil-
ians. It is expected that the entire garrison, except a small
guard, will leave before tomorrow night.
REPORT FROM SAN ANTONIO.
San Antonio, Texas, June 22.—General Funston says
he will issue no new orders until he receives General Per-
shing's report detailing the battle of Carrizal, in which forty
Americans are rejMirted killed, many wounded and seven-
teen captured.
The following version of the fight has been received
officially: “Five troops of the Tenth (negro) Cavalry were
scouting near Carrizal to investigate the report that a large
force of Mexicans was moving westward, when they were
discovered by outposts, who retreated towards the village.
General Felix Gomez raised a white flag in the western part
of the town. The American commander, who is still un-
identified, entered the village with his command. Gomez
opened fire with machine guns from the housetops. Street
fighting lasted two hours. The Mexicans received heavy
reinforcements from Villa Ahumada, compelling the Ameri-
cans to retire. Gomez died of his wounds. It is reported
now that the Mexicans hold the village. The Americans
are encamped nearby on the foothills. It is understood that
Pershing has sent reinforcements.”
General Pershing has wired General Funston that he
had heard nothing of the Carrizal battle except the repeat
from General Bell at El Paso. Pershig has sent a squadron
of the Tenth Cavalry to investigate.
BAKER WANTS TROOPS FOR BORDER.
Washington, June 22.—Secretary Baker announces that
the department is trying to get the Kansas. California and
Missouri militia to the border immediately. They total eight
thousand men. Raker went to the White House at 9:10 this
morning for a conference with Wilson after receiving a
message from Funston stating that an official report of the
fight had been delayed by the fact that it had to he carried
seventy miles by courier.
