DRT honors Samford Citizens of the Republic
The William Carroll Crawford Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic
of Texas held a Samford Medallion and Memorial Service at 10 a.m. Sat-
urday, June 6, 2016 in the 1885 Historic Courthouse.
The Samfords and their wives commemorated with the medallions were
the following: William Jasper and Barbara Snider Samford; Elkanah and
Davilla Adeline Lucas Samford; Mary Magdalene Weaver Samford; Snider
and Jamima Jane Hughes Samford; and William Jasper Samford.
The descendants of the Samfords, Hugheses, and Weavers were recog-
nized.
Nancy Keeling, WCC DRT President, gave the Call to Remembrance;
and Chapter Chaplain Stella Walker gave the Invocation. This was followed
by the Pledges to the United States Flag and the Texas Flag.
"Texas, Our Texas" was sung by the attendees, led by Stella Walker and
her guitar.
The ceremony was followed by pictures on the Courthouse grounds and
refreshments in the Gibson Room of the Courthouse. Tours were taken of
the Courthouse and the DRT "First Ladies in Texas" Building.

LeAnn Rafferty, member of Tenaha Businessmen’s’ Luncheon, asked
about continuing education and other courses designed for non-traditional
students. Clinton answered, “25% - 30% of all classes offered are continu-
ing education courses.”
Clinton also pointed out that distance learning continues to be growing
popular choice for students. “80% of all students are taking at least one
class online. This summer, 900 students are enrolled summer school and
most of those classes are online courses; only about 10% are face-to-face
courses,” stated Clinton.
Clinton invites everyone to come and see the changes and new facilities
on campus at Panola College.
Other business conducted at the luncheon included acknowledgement
of a “Thank You” letter from Caleb Garcia, winner of a $500 scholarship
from the Tenaha Businessmen’s Luncheon. Congratulations were made
to member, LeAnn Rafferty, for her recent election to Judge of the 123rd
District Court. A Fourth of July committee report was made. Preparations
are well underway for the hreworks celebration to be held on the football
held for the 4th of July. The Tenaha Businessmen’s Luncheon is seeking
donations for hreworks and is asking for volunteers to help set up and
prepare between 8:30 a.m. - 9 a.m. the day of the event. The Senior Girls
Basketball team will have a concession stand. The gates open at 7 p.m.,
singing and entertainment begins at 8 p.m., and a grand hreworks display
will start at 9 p.m.
A reminder was given to vote on May 24 for the runoff and state board
of education. Support for Kevin Ellis is strongly encouraged.
Stacey Cranford provided a report for the City of Tenaha. The City has
recently elected a new mayor and two council members. The City has just
completed repairs to fencing as well as new fencing being installed. Stacy
Cranford says, “Now that we have hnally had a stop in the rain, we can get
out and get our right of ways and other areas in the city mowed.” Cranford
also affirmed, “You’ve got a good mayor that has jumped in with both feet.
I think it will be a blessing for the City. Go to meetings and voice your
opinions. The council needs to hear what you have to say.”
The Tenaha Businessmen’s Luncheon is held on the second Thursday
of every month at 11:30 a.m., and is held at Tenaha First Baptist Church.
All are invited to attend and participate. July’s special guest speaker will
be Mr. Lane Dunn.
