Medical grants available for children in Texas
The UnitedHealthcare Chil-
dren's Foundation (UHCCF)
is seeking grant applications
from Texas families in need
of financial assistance to help
pay for their child's health care
treatments, services or equip-
ment not covered, or not fully
covered, by their commercial
health insurance plan.
Qualifying families can re-
ceive up to $5,000 per grant
with a lifetime maximum of
$10,000 per child to help pay
for medical services and equip-
ment such as physical, occu-
pational and speech therapy,
counseling services, surgeries,
prescriptions, wheelchairs, or-
thotics, eyeglasses and hearing
aids.
Since 2007, UHCCF has
awarded over 10,000 grants
valued at more than $29 mil-
lion to children and their fami-
lies across the United States
for treatments associated with
medical conditions such as can-
cer, spina bifida, muscular dys-
trophy, diabetes, hearing loss,
autism, cystic fibrosis, Down
syndrome, ADHD and cerebral
palsy.
To be eligible for a grant, chil-
dren must be 16 years of age or
younger. Families must meet
economic guidelines, reside in
the United States and have a
commercial health insurance
plan. Grants are available for
medical expenses families have
incurred 60 days prior to the
date of application as well as
for ongoing and future medical
needs. Families do not need to
have insurance through United-
Healthcare to be eligible.
Parents or legal guardians
may apply for grants at UHC-
CF.org, and there is no applica-
tion deadline.
"As a parent, I realize that
child medical costs can be finan-
cially and emotionally difficult
for families. The UnitedHealth-
care Children's Foundation is
offering medical grants to help
families in Texas access and pay
for care that will improve their
child's health," says Tom Quirk,
CEO of United Healthcare of
Texas. "The UnitedHealthcare
Children's Foundation recently
awarded its 10,000th child medi-
cal grant and is seeking to help
thousands of more children and
families in need. We encourage
everyone to spread the word to
friends, family members and
colleagues that child medical
grants are available from the
UnitedHealthcare Children's
Foundation."

Big soccer complex planned for Lindale
Economic outlook program
is tomorrow in Mineola
Officials with the Lindale Eco-
nomic Development Corpora-
tion have announced an agree-
ment with FC Dallas East Texas
involving a first-of-its-kind soc-
cer complex to be located on
land north of the Lindale Indus-
trial Park.
The LEDC is to sell 30 1/2 acres
of land north of Interstate 20 for
$600,000 to FC Dallas East Texas.
The complex will be located on
the northeast corner of the 137
acres owned by the LEDC.
FC Dallas officials said they ex-
pect the project to be completed
and open in the fall of 2017. The
group's estimated investment in
the area will be between $2 and
$3 million.
The complex will feature eight
fields (the majority of them
grass), an office, indoor meet-
ing/training facility, concession
stands, parking lots and rest-
rooms.
LEDC officials feel this com-
plex will be a catalyst for more
development, including restau-
rants, hotels and retail facilities.
FC Dallas East Texas features
more than 60 boys and girls soc-
cer teams with this number ex-
pected to grow to 90 during the
next year and a half.
"This is huge for Lindale, just
huge," said LEDC President Su-
san Gill.
She and city officials have been
in contact with FC Dallas offi-
cials since the first of the year.
FC Dallas was the third entity to
contact the LEDC about a sports
venue on the site.
"We will reinvest the money
back into the area," she said.
Professional exhibition games
are being planned for the facil-
ity, FC Dallas East Texas officials
said.
Practices will be scheduled on
weekdays during daylight hours
with games being played on Sat-
urdays from 8 a.m.-lO p.m. and
Sundays from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
FC Dallas East Texas will host
at least four tournaments the
first year of operation.
A three-lane road will be built
on the west side of the complex
to help with traffic flow.
Off-duty police officers will be
employed as needed for traffic
control, FC Dallas East Texas of-
ficials said.
The city of Mineola, as well as Alba, Quitman,
Winnsboro and Yantis, as well as The Harris House
and J&J Meat Market, are among the sponsors of the
Wood County Economic Outlook program tomor-
row at the Mineola Civic Center.
The program is featuring Ray Perryman, a Lindale
native, who is founder and president of The Perry-
man Group, a financial analysis firm headquartered
in Waco.
The event is being presented by the Wood County
Industrial Commission and is set from 6-8 p.m. Res-
ervations are being taken for the program through
today (Wednesday), which includes a ribeye steak
dinner, for $15. Contact Kiki Bettis at the Wood
County Industrial Commission at 903-768-2402 for
reservations.
Mineola Masonic Lodge
to host veteran breakfast
Meredith Foundation
From page 2A
gestion of his friends he
gave $50,000 for a public
library building in Mine-
ola. This was the only
project he lived to see ac-
complished.
The original board or-
ganized on July 19, 1958
which consisted of Harry
Meredith as chairman,
James Judge, Ross Luke-
nbill, Joe H. Sharp and
Leonard Bruner. Land
for the library was pur-
chased by the sale of 200
shares of El Paso Nation-
al Gas stock, a gift to the
foundation from James
C. and Anna Butler
Judge. Twenty thousand
dollars was granted to
the foundation and plans
began in April of 1959.
On July 21, 1959 Harry
Meredith broke ground
for the library and made
the following statement
at the ground breaking,
"I am giving this build-
ing to pay Mineola back
for all it has done for me.
Mineola has been good
to me and what I have
accumulated has come
from right here in Mine-
ola. I want to do this for
the people of Mineola."
It was suggested that
the library be named
Meredith Library, but
he preferred it be called
the Mineola Public Li-
brary. He did agree that
the meeting room might
be called the Meredith
Room. (It later did be-
come Mineola Memorial
Library).
On February, 12, 1960,
the City Commission-
ers passed a resolution
to accept the library for
the City of Mineola. On
March 13,1960, the dedi-
cation of the Mineola
Public Library was held.
No one was happier than
Mr. Meredith himself.
For a few months fol-
lowing this dedication
Meredith met regularly
with the foundation
board as the chairman.
He remained interested
in the business and civic
affairs of the town and
usually walked the two
blocks to the First Na-
tional Bank each morn-
ing to visit a while as
he had done for many
years. He also attended
the directors meetings.
After a few months he
was not longer able to
do these things and later
died at his home on June
11,1962.
Meredith had arranged
a sizeable part of his
wealth to go to the Mere-
dith Foundation with the
stipulation that it was to
help the people of Mine-
ola. Donations from the
Foundation may be only
to charitable or non-prof-
it organizations (501c3).
Former trustees were
Harry Jones, James Dear,
Sid Cox, Ray Williams,
Everett Smith, Coulter
Templeton, J.C. Norris
and W.T. "Dub" Harri-
son. Current trustees are
Lou Wagner, Bob Smith,
Freda Madsen, Jerry
Phillips and Joe Wil-
liams.
