Guest Column
BY KHALISHA GATLIN, SOCIAL SECURITY PUBLIC AFFAIRS, LAFAYETTE, LA.
Your winning retirement plan
This month, a driver will take the
checkered flag at the Daytona 500, skiers
will stand atop the podium at the World
Alpine Ski Championships in Vail, Colo-
rado, and a football team will win Super
Bowl XLIX in Glendale, Arizona. The
sports are different, but the winners share
a common trait - years of commitment to
their plans.
To win the retirement game, you also
need commitment and a plan. For years,
you've worked hard and paid into
Social Security. Whether you're new to
the workforce or getting ready to cross
your own career finish line, youll want
to open a my Social Security account to
see how your hard work is paying off.
You can create or access your account
at socialsecurity.gov/ myaccount. You can
use it to verify your earnings history, get
estimates of your future Social Security
benefits, and more. It's the place to get
the information you need to put together
your own winning game plan.
A good NASCAR pit crew keeps its
driver on the track, and our Retirement
Estimator can do the same for your retire-
ment plan. The Estimator offers an instant
and tailored estimate of your future
Social Security benefits based on your
earnings record. You can plug in different
anticipated yearly earnings to discover
different retirement options and learn
how your benefits could increase if you
work longer. Give the Retirement Estima-
tor a test drive today at socialsecurity.gov /
estimator.
Once you've come of age to retire - or
if you're just in the planning phase - our
quick and convenient online services are
in place at www.socialsecurity.gov/apply-
online. In as little as 15 minutes, you can
speed through our online application.
In most cases, once your application is
submitted electronically, you're done.
There are no forms to sign and usually no
documentation is required.
Fine-tune your game plan. Take ad-
vantage of our services and resources at
socialsecurity.gov to optimize your retire-
ment.
Mineola Memorial Library Notes
BY LIBRARIAN MARY HURLEY
As I type this column, I
cannot believe that we are
already into 2015! Wasn't
that long ago that I was
in school writing about
events in 2015, 2020, 2025.
When you are in elemen-
tary, that seems so very far in the distant
future and yet, here we are!
Once again, the library would like to
thank all of the people who support the
library with their time, talents, gifts and
patronage. In 2014 we had over 21,000
people visit and use the library and over
400 were new library patrons. Those that
used the materials in the library saved
$709,152.85. We answered over 6,500 ref-
erence questions and the library comput-
ers and wireless internet were used, too.
We said goodbye to some employees
and welcomed some new ones.
We rearranged different areas to high-
light different collections.
Now we are looking forward to what
2015 will bring.
The Friends of the Mineola Memorial
Library will begin meeting on the first
Thursday of the month at 1 p.m. in the
Meredith Room of the library. Because of
the New Year's Day holiday, the Janu-
ary meeting will be on Thursday, Jan. 8.
Programs are planned through June. The
Friends support the library with volun-
teers to help man the library when events
take staff members out and they help
with the Annex Book Sale four times a
year. They are discussing other fundrais-
ers and promotions for the library. Come
and be a part of this wonderful group of
people.
We will continue with Terrific Tues-
days for the school-aged kids on Tuesday
afternoons beginning promptly at 4 p.m.
on Jan. 13. PreSchool Story Time for our
youngest patrons will resume on Wednes-
day mornings at 11:15 a.m. on Jan. 14.
Young Adult Financial Literacy continues
on Wednesday afternoons at 4 p.m. for
the 12- to 20-year-old group. ESL will be
Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. Jimmy con-
tinues to give guitar lessons on Thursday
afternoons about 2:30 p.m. American
Girls Historical Reading Club will contin-
ue to meet on the second Saturday of the
month with girls and their moms learning
about history through games, crafts, and
snacks. Homeschool Heroes will meet
the first Friday of the month beginning
promptly at 1 p.m. and ending at 2 p.m.
giving parents a chance to network and
children an activity while the networking
happens. Family Craft Day is the third
Friday of the month promptly at 1 p.m.
for families to work together on a simple,
fun project.
With all of our activities come a few
reminders. Parents are responsible for the
actions and behaviors of their children
at all times while at the library which in-
cludes times when they are meeting with
other parents. The library is open Tuesday
to Saturday and is closed on Sunday and
Monday. Public access computers are
free to use but you must take turns and
pay for any copies made and remember,
they are public computers in a very public
place. No smoking at the library and no
pets (unless they are service animals).
The Mineola Memorial Library is a
501(c)3, non-profit. We would like to
recognize the following people for their
donations: Century 21 Town and Country
Realty, Sara Blakemore, Linda Wray and
James Anderson.
The members of the Fannie Marchman Garden Club in Mineola donated some
much needed items to the Northeast Child Advocacy Center. They donated stuffed
animals and shower gel and shampoo that the older boys prefer. They also pro-
vided office supplies including copy paper, coffee and coffee filters for the volun-
teers. Shown are, from left, Bernie Carter, Rosemarie Kastrou, Patsy Sharp, Charla
Martin, NETCAC Director Imelda Tatsch and Carol Patterson. (Courtesy photo)
Letter to the Ed tor
Dear editor,
On behalf of the Bread of Life Ministries, we wish to thank Broad
Street Church of Christ for hosting the 2014 Community Christ-
mas Lunch, volunteers and donors for giving their time and
financial support. We gave out 370 lunches of which 90 meals
were delivered to home-bounds and the rest were picked up.
Thank you churches, Mineola Monitor and volunteers for part-
nering with us to raise fund in the 'Breakfast with a Heart' and all
our faithful donors who have given so much to help us provide
the needy in Wood County area. It's been a fruitful and challeng-
ing year for us and we are looking forward to partner with you in
2015.
God bless and keep you always,
Kenneth Teo, Bread of Life Ministries
