Abbott appoints Morath as Texas Education Commissioner
On Dec. 14, Governor Greg
Abbott announced Mike
Morath to be the commissioner
of the Texas Education Agency.
He will oversee the TEA and
the state's 1,200 districts, in-
cluding Mineola.
Morath replaces outgoing
Commissioner Michael Wil-
liams, who served from 2011.
Williams previously served on
the Railroad Commission that
regulates the oil and gas indus-
try. After Williams announced
he was leaving, the Mine-
ola School board joined other
boards in the state requesting
that the next commissioner
have experience in the educa-
tion field.
Mineola Super-
intendent Kim
Fuller said, "As a
board member,
Mr. Morath has a
working knowl-
edge of many as-
pects of the public school sys-
tem and we are hopeful that
he will work closely and con-
sider the input from teachers
and educators across the state
in his policy implementation.
His interest in supporting lo-
cal control and letting districts
make the best choices for their
students is the right attitude for
communities and districts as
we navigate the complex edu-
cational world of accountability
and funding."
Morath served on the Dallas
Independent School District
School Board since being elect-
ed in 2011.
Some reforms he was in-
volved in included helping
guide DISD to become the first
major school system in Texas
to pay teachers based on per-
formance rather than seniority;
pushing reforms of early child-
hood program and improved
career readiness by facilitating
coordination with the Dallas
Regional Chamber.
Morath is a product of Texas
public schools and graduated
from Garland High School. He
taught computer science at his
alma mater when the previous
teacher unexpectedly resigned.
He received a bachelors of busi-
ness sdministration, summa
cum laude, from George Wash-
ington University in 2 Vi years.
In 2014 Morath was involved
in an attempt to make DISD a
home rule district. This Texas
law basically removes a district
from TEA control, and allows it
to set its own rules about stan-
dards, curriculum and teacher
salaries. The scheme was ulti-
mately unsuccessful.
"I'm honored by Governor
Abbott's appointment and for
the opportunity to serve our
kids with a focus on improv-
ing student outcomes," said
Morath. "As a DISD trustee, I
watched the skill and love our
teachers and staff pour into our
students every day. I realize
that no school system's students
can outperform their teachers,
and supporting our teachers
to improve teacher quality is
essential in our public educa-
tion system. I look forward to
advancing that quality, as well
as student outcomes, to ensure
Texas becomes the number one
school system in the nation."
