Mineola graduate takes on “green screen”
By JOSH LAND
The Monitor Staff
Mineola Graduate Rhett Self recently completed
two commercials for Cooperative Teachers Credit
Union, which can be seen on television sets across
East Texas. Self accepted when he was asked to be
the “face of the company."
After high school graduation last spring, Self
played in the Down Under Bowl in Australia with
teammate Josh Hurst. "This past summer I got the
opportunity to play in Australia in the Down Under
Bowl. I have always wanted to go to Australia and I
love football so I figured why not take advantage of
a great opportunity? Going there was great. I met
people from all over the United States and all over
the world. I was on the Texas, Louisiana and New
Mexico team."
Self said that they got to see some of the tourist
attractions while there but his favorite part was the
Aboriginal tribal dances. "It was really fun to get to
watch those dances, and I even joined in on the fun
and danced myself. There were dances about the
way locals live, hunted, the stars and sky. It was
really interesting." Self was in Australia about "two
weeks," and came back injury free.
Living on campus at Dallas Baptist University,
Self worked hard for his 4.0 grade point average
his first semester. He got a jump-start on many
students as he had 18 college credit hours earned
while in Mineola High School which will make him
a sophomore, "sometime next semester."
He took Old Testament Survey, World Litera-
ture, Introduction to Christian Ministry and math
his first semester and is on the Accelerated Masters
Program for Christian Studies in Global Leadership
with plans of graduating in four years.

Teachers Credit Union at graduation for $2,000 dur-
ing graduation. The next day they called my mom
and asked if I wanted a job," Self said. "Would you
be the face of the company? I was like, sure. My
dad taught me at a young age, walk into a place like
you own it and walk out like you just sold it."
The commercials were filmed in Tyler, one of
which was on a "green screen" at KLTV. Producers
emailed the script to Self and when filming he had
to get everything in 20 seconds. "It was hard to get
the timing down but being in high school drama re-
ally helped me out. Most of it came easy to me. I
have to give most of the credit to my parents. They
raised me to be the man I am today and I'm thankful
for them."
"They were impressed with it; the Lord helped
me out with demeanor and confidence." The green
screen commercial took a little more time as Self
pointed out, "They put up animations behind you,
that aren't really there. There were several X marks
on the ground, showing where to stand and I found
out real quick that it wasn't as easy as I anticipated.
It was very hard to be constricted and memorize all
the things to do the commercial."
Self said the company's grand scheme is to have
his face associated with the company so they of-
fered and he signed a contract. "They gave me a
scholarship and that was a blessing in itself. They
gave me this job and they are working around my
schedule with school. It was a blessing from God."
When asked if he had future aspirations to act
he said, "If the Lord opens up some doors and he
wants me to evangelize through film I will. I feel
like Hollywood, is a very dark place when it comes
to spiritual life. I would love to advance into a posi-
tion to where I can be an actor in Hollywood."
"When God has a plan, you can't stop it. It's go-
ing to happen no matter what," Self said. He looks
to keep his 4.0 GPA as the second semester started
on Tuesday and looks to film another "two or three"
commercials soon.
Hwy. 69 crash sends three to Tyler hospitals
Two people were transported by
emergency helicopter to hospitals in
Tyler after a two-vehicle collision on
Highway 69 Saturday evening.
Both drivers of the two vehicles in-
volved were taken by helicopter to
Mother Trances Hospital in Tyler.
According to Department of Public
Safety Trooper Stephen Nichols' re-
port Osma Carroll, 66, Mineola, was
driving a 2010 Chrysler Sebring and
had no passengers. Les Clanton, 43,
Alba, was driving a 1993 Suburban
on Highway 69 north in the north-
bound lane. Passengers were his
wife, Aimee; Tessa Sasser, 15; Logan
Clanton, 9 and Eric Clanton, 8.
In addition to the drivers, Mrs.
Clanton was transported to East Tex-
as Medical Center Hospital in Tyler
but was released over the weekend.
According to the report, Carroll
was stopped at a stop sign on County
Road 2311 at the Highway 69 inter-
section. The report states he failed
to yield the right-of-way by pulling
in the path of the Suburban. The
left front of the Suburban struck the
Chrysler in the left front quarter. All
occupants were in seatbelts.
Carroll was cited for failure to yield
the right-of-way.
An Alba area family is counting their blessings after a weekend accident on US Highway 69 this weekend. Les Paul and
Aimee Clanton along with three children survived the crash. Les hurt his foot and underwent knee surgery while all others
were released from the hospital. (Courtesy photo)
