mold Barnett isn't your typical col-
lege student. The 91-year-old
doesn't let his age slow him down
as he continues his mastery of
subjects with his tutor, middle school algebra
teacher Rae Ann Pruitt by his side.
The foil method and quadratic equation were just
two of the components the duo used to solve prob-
lems Wednesday night. "He does lots of studying on
his own. When I come here on Wednesdays he has
things highlighted and questions ready/' said Pruitt.
Barnett has a Facebook page and constantly uses
Google to look up stuff,
according to his daugh-
ter Joyce Guice. "He con-
stantly wants to learn new
things on a variety of sub-
jects and loves math."
"I tried to get my daughter to move me to a nursing
home across the street from Tyler Junior College. Be-
ing that close I could walk, or crawl my way to class,"
Barnett said with a smile.
Also an avid reader, a typical trip to Barnes and
Nobles typically costs Barnett $300 to $400. And al-
though he hasn't had a chance to read all his books,
he said, "I'm not finished yet."
E ven though the Navy cut his Mineola High School
career short, he received his GED years later and set
his sights on furthering his education. Barnett ini-
tially began studying nursing after exiting the Navy

in 1945 before taking up a career as a machinist. He
worked for over 40 years before retiring from the
Dow Chemical Company in Houston in February of
1992.
After the nursing classes he started studying busi-
ness and has since earned over 60 college credit
hours, according to Barnett. "Taking classes online
is difficult in some aspects. When you are online you
don't have a professor in front of you to ask ques-
tions."
"She's the best," was Barnett's comment on his tu-
tor and he said without her he wouldn't have pro-
gressed this far. As they go over individual questions,
Pruitt will write the page numbers of the problems in
his textbook so he can go over them when she's not
there.
Barnett signed up for Iris first online class through
TJC, and Pruitt began helping him in September of
2014. He had a computer built at the Computer Em-
porium and said, "I don't know as much as I should
about this computer, but I would like to know more.
I would like to take classes and find out much more
about how these things work."
"I have had a thing up here (points to his head)
about learning since I could remember," Barnett said
and that's a big reason why he's enrolled in classes
today. "I just love to learn."
For those thinking about going back to school, no
matter your age Barnett said, "Go back. Go for it,
you're never too old to learn."
So, what's next for Barnett? Perhaps a career in
nursing home administration as Barnett concluded,
"Maybe I can take some classes and since I'm already
here the current administrator will allow me to fol-
low them around and learn more."
No matter what Barnett's next step is, one thing is
certain; he will continue to learn one way or the other
and have fun doing so.
