NETPA contest information released
The North and East Texas Press Associa-
tion, in conjunction with the Texas Press
Association will award two $1,500 scholar-
ships, one to a graduating high school se-
nior and one to a currently enrolled college
student.
The scholarships are payable at $750 per
semester to the registrar of the college of
the recipient's choice after the scholarship
recipient has sent proof of registration to
NETPA Secretary Cher Thompson.
Applications must be postmarked by
March 18 to be considered and winners will
be notified by April 11. Applicants must be
from the area served by NETPA and have
a declared major in journalism, communi-
cations, or photojournalism. Preference is
given to print majors.
Along with the completed application,
applicants must include a resume that in-
cludes scholastic, athletic and community
activities; provide a current official tran-
script certified by school or college regis-
trar; high school applicants should submit
three letters of recommendation from a se-
nior, junior or dual credit college English
instructor, a publication supervisor or local
newspaper supervisor student and from a
person of the applicant's choice.
All applicants should submit clips of
published work, with publication dates in-
cluded. Applicants may send photocopies
of work as published in a yearbook or mag-
azine. Event organizers suggest mounting
all photocopies and newspaper clippings
on paper and placing in a folder or binder.
A cover sheet should be included and
should have the student's name, indi-
cate which scholarship you are applying
for (scholastic-HS or collegiate), address,
phone number and email.
Completed applications should be sent
to Suzanne Bardwell, Gladewater Mirror,
2110 North Main Street, Gladewater, TX
75647.
Scholarship applications can be found at
netpa.us or uiltexas.org/journalism/ilpc.
If anyone has questions or wishes to re-
ceive applicants via email email Suzanne
Bardwell at SuzanneBardwell@aol.com or
call 903-845-2235.
Event planners say at judges' discretion,
two scholarships may be awarded in one
category and one in another based on the
quality of the applications.
Scholarship winners are responsible for
submitting proof of college registration
before scholarship monies will be sent
to college and the scholarship will be re-
voked if the student's major changes.

MISD employees and
public meetings set for
superintendent search
The Mineola School District Board of
Trustees with assistance from the Texas
Association of School Boards (TASB) Ex-
ecutive Search Services has begun work
to select the new superintendant for the
school district. As part of that process,
the TASB search consultant would like to
meet with various groups to begin devel-
oping the qualifications and characteris-
tics of the ideal superintendent for Mine-
ola School District.
To provide residents and employees an
opportunity to offer their input, meetings
on Thursday, Jan. 29 have been scheduled.
All meetings will be held in the board
room at the Central Administration Build-
ing on Loop 564.
Mineola Superintendant John Fuller said,
"We would appreciate members of the
community and staff attending one of the
meetings listed to record the group's re-
sponse to a number of questions regarding
the ideal superintendent. Public attendance
and comments are greatly appreciated."
Each meeting is expected to last approx-
imately an hour.
The district employees meetings are
scheduled for 3:45-4:30 p.m. and 4:30 to
5:15 p.m.
The general public meetings will be held
from 5:15-6 p.m. and 6-6:45.
The trustees will meet with the consul-
tant at 7 p.m. to give their input.
For questions contact the superinten-
dant's office at 903-569-2448.
Correction
In the Jan. 21 edition of the Monitor, an
article was published about a fund being
set up for a man who wants to run in the
Boston Marathon. The man's name was
errantly said to be "Hector Rodriguez"
in the opening line of the story, when it
should have read Clemente Rodriguez.
Chamber
From page 1A
Frazier, who had agreed to serve as
chairman of the banquet committee,
gave an update on their work. The
banquet date has been will be March
19 at 6 p.m. at the Mineola Civic Cen-
ter. Tickets will be $25 and the details
of the meal are still being worked
out. He said rather than having en-
tertainment this year there will be a
speaker. The theme will be "Spring
into Action."
The new manager, who was in her
third week in the office, said there
are two new members as well as one
application that's been placed and
the fee is being awaited.
Eubanks also noted the upcoming
events for the chamber are the ban-
quet and the Iron Horse Festival on
Nov. 7. On Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. there will
be a mixer at the Luscious Crumb.
Community reports
Speaking of the Luscious Crumb,
Main Street Manager Lynda
Rauscher announced that the own-
er, Dawn Trammell, is one of three
nominees for an Emerging Women
Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
The award will be presented at the
17th Annual 2015 Women Entre-
preneurs Conference held by the
Tyler Junior College Small Business
Development Center on Feb. 24.
Rauscher also announced that
tickets for the Main Street Wine
Train had only been on sale 12
days and there were already only
23 seats remaining. The event is
Main Street's main fundraiser. She
said about 75 percent of the people
who go on the trip are from out of
town and many of the Main Street
projects are funded by the event.
She also reported the city is hold-
ing a Trout Fishing Day at the na-
ture preserve on Feb. 14. Some of
the school fishing team members
will help out and Texas Parks &
Wildlife Department will stock
1,000 fish before the event. "You
can catch your Valentine's dinner,"
Boyd quipped.
The museum baked potato fund-
raiser was also announced and will
be held on Friday. Rauscher said
anyone who is interested can get in
touch with her at city hall.
And, she said that on Feb. 14 Ra-
fael Espinoza will host an educa-
tional music tribute called Winter
Dance Party. He recently hosted an
event for Elvis' 80th birthday and
Rauscher said it was "very enter-
taining." Rauscher said Espinoza's
shop can "accommodate comfort-
ably 50 people."
"We are thrilled to death that
Mineola has this kind of entertain-
ment downtown," she said.
The community reports included
Councilwoman Sue Jones remind-
ing those present of the monthly
Mineola City Council workshops
and encouraging anyone who was
interested to attend. The meetings
are held on the Thursday that im-
mediately precedes the fourth
Monday regular meeting.
"Feel free to come." She contin-
ued, "I just want to express to you
and everybody who lives in the
city, our constituents, your input
is welcomed. We actually need to
hear from you." She invited them
to go to the meetings and speak if
there is something on their mind.
"Be vocal now, not after we take
some action you don't like."
On behalf of the Mineola League
of the Arts, Everett Scott reported
that fiber arts, crocheting, spinning,
weaving, mg hooking and necktie
pillow making are on the organiza-
tion's upcoming calendar.
