Durward Shaw, 46. died Monday
morning at his resident* on Route
I, Carthage, following a sudden
illness He was a native of the
county, a veteran of World War
II, and was a member of the Bap
list Church He was a rancher by
profession.
Funeral services were held Tu-
esday at 4 p.m. at the Fair Play
Baptist Church with the Rev Way
ae Reeves and Rev. Browning of-
ficiating. Burial was in the Wal
drop Cemetery under the direction
nf Hawthorn Funeral Home
Surviving are a brother, Rich
mond Shaw. Nacogdoches; four
Maters. Mrs L. V. Knott. Uncas
ter; Mrs H B Reed Carthage,
Mrs. R. C Steger, Pittsburg, and
Mrs. J. D. Pack, Palestine, and his
mother. Mrs Elsie Shaw. Carthage
job particularly struck her fancy.
She remarked. "Cook what a beau-
tiful boat- hut what a shame it
doesn’t even have a motor.”
A TRIP to a press convention
has always been inspiring and edu-
cational to uw -but the annual
state convention my family and I
stiended in Houston taro week*
ago was among tops n any of the
convent ons we have ever at-
tended
The reason for this being such
an unusual trip was the fact that
we saw so many interesting things
that are going on presently in
Houston one moat impressive
sight was a first hand review and
briefing on the new Harris County
domed atadtum that Is being built
for the home of the Co't .43's. The
University of Houston will also
play all of their home football
games in this great wonder of the
world . The stadium iUelf is some,
thing amating -but the most fabu-
lous part is Its versatility of be-
ing changed to accommodate all
types of sports-and this is within
a matter of minutes The playing
fields can be rhanged from base-
ball to football, track or basket-
ball. The majority of this proced-
ure Is operated by push • button
methods.
Another wonder of the stadium
Is that it is completely air condi-
tioned by a total of §6,000 tons of
cooling capacity Incidentally, the
scoreboard for the stadium will
cost two ml lion dollars. This
aeems almost unreasonable, but it
is rustom built and it la almost
unbelteveable what It will do. For
Instance: when a player knocks a
home run in .baseball or makes a
touchdown In football -his picture
will fash on a huge television
type screen on the board giving
spectators full atactic* on the
player. How about that for two
million dollars?
ANOTHER INTIRIITINO four
of the convention was a visit to tho
Houston Space Center. The group
was briefed on future plans of the
NASA Houston base and their par-
ticipation in the national space
program. This was a very infor-
mative tour.
I THIt WAS the playing portion-
the remainder of the convention
was work shops in newspapertng
and methods to offer readers
greater satisfaction from news-
papers
VRRNOL BUTLIR was chosen
as one of sis Chevrolet dealers in
the Dafas tone on a discussion
panel of future plans relative to
the Chevrolet OK used car pro-
gram. He was in Dallas several
days last week attending this
special meeting.
MARIS FI Kg SCALI made the
news In the San Antonio News
while sttending the County and
District Cleska meet in San An-
tonin She had her picture in that
paper looking up at l/cwis Banks
from Rusk. Mr. Banks appeared
to measure about 4 ft.. 6 inches and
the caption under the picture read
“How's the weather up (here Mr.
Banks’”
MR AND MRS K. BAKIR, Olorla
and Kabul attended the state Bar
Convention in Houston last week.
At the end of the three day con-
vention. the family spent two days
in Galveston swimming in tbs
Gulf.

Hoped them inexpectedly as they

It took only a few minutes for
the sun to do a perfect drying
fob, and they looked as though
they had come directly from the
presser Quincy aaid this might be
a new wr' ikle on the cleaning pro
