EDITORIAL
We have had the question popped at us latelv who we
would support editorially in the national election These ques-
tions have come mainly we think, due to the conservative
stand this newspaper has taken during the past decade And
even though it has changed publishers in the past two years,
it still maintains conservative thinking
line to this conservatism, we have been labeled recently
as a Republican newspaper by many staunch Democrats But,
we are an independent Democratic newspaper and support
Democrats when we feel their individual views are best for
this country.
We began early in Ibis presidential election year to study
the candidates and Ihe issues involved Our predictions were
that this would he the most heated presidential election dur-
ing this writer's adulthood And well admit at this hour of
the race tactics and mudslinging by both parties in the presi-
dential campaign have almost made us sick at our stomach
Phis writer grew up in a solid Democratic home and my
parents and grandparents to my knowledge, never voted any-
thing but a straight Democratic ticket In addition to this.
I was indoctrinated that this party was the only party tn
which to place my trust
Well, like most things times have changed and it's our
thinking that manv changes have occurred in the Democratic
party, their jxilicies thinking and platform We have heard
many individuals who have been staunch Democrats until
recently make th4- statement that “they have not left the
Democratic party—the party left them "
And they have further said that it was their hope that
fhev live to see their party throw out the socialistic trend
that has dominated if for the past 23 to 30 years and once
again adopt the principles that made if a party of the people
and for the people -and not one of politicians who seek per
sonal gain and become power mad
As to party lovalty we have never placed this as an
important factor We re a free country and free people and
like to think free Mow can we vote free on election dav if
candidates are nominated on either ticket for whom we do
not (are to cast our vote'’ In choosing a candidate from the
countv level to the national level, we base our vote on the
ability and honesty of the person whom we feel is best suited
for fhe (oh We like to vote independent as a lot of other
people do and enjoy this greaf privilege
We feel fhat many • hanges should he made He think
fr.r government operation is too big and costly We want to
be gin paying oil our national dehf and siarl to show a bal
a need budget Too much money is going out of that country
for foreign aid And above all. we believe m a firm polio
against communism Therefore to help rnrrect these prob
lems fhaf face the American people changes must he made
in Washington
Thu*, an indei»endenl position allows fhe free thinking
American eiti/en to choose am r andidafe he wishes flemo
crafn or Republican We believe a two-party svslem » vitally
necessary to prevent our nation from falling into a socialistic
«fate and well cast our vote as an independent anv day
where we believe it will help improve our country
And regardless of who wins we will support fhe elected
in every possible wav fo improve this great land and protest
it from evils I
