ATLANTA
JOHN EVANS, Ed.D
While the Maverick Club visited our beautiful azaleas here
in Tyler, I was fortunate enough to be having a blast in
Braselton, Georgia, home the Road Atlanta race course.
Also, I believe that this is the town recently bought by
actress Kim Bassinger. Since I didn't get to see her, I'll
continue with the next best topic -- racing!
Representatives of our favorite mark started out four and
five rows back. There were only two 962 GTP entries --
Moretti (MOMO)/Bell and Weaver/Haywood in the Bud
car. It was certainly clear that even with their new engines
(water-cooled, heads, etc.) that they were just no match
for the new designs in the sprint around the 2.5 mile road
course. Interestingly enough, the surviving Nissan and
the two 962's were the only top finishers that still sounded
good as they lapped the track at the end. The second
place Jag and the third place Toyota really began to
sound ragged about three-fourths the way through. The
first place Nissan of Brabham and Daly sound exactly as
it did when it started the race -- quite impressive. For those
who like the big bore Motown sound, the Chevy Spice
filled the bill and ran quite well for most of the race.
Road Atlanta is a beautiful course with several blind,
sweeping corners and some pretty good high speed sec-
tions. Since I had been to the San Antonio race several
times, I soon discovered that there is quite a difference in
a road course and a street course. In spite of their dif-
ferences, such as better viewing areas and more room on
the track itself, which didn't help Chip Robinson (he only
made one lap before leaving the track), they both have
one thing in common. That common item being the un-
believable speed that those crazy people drive around the
course. Watching those races on ESPN and TNN does
not give you the perspective of just how quickly those cars
go around the turns or down the straights. What a thrill to
see it in person!
If you have never been able to make one the GTP/GTL
races, you are missing a real treat. It's fun, fast, and ex-
citing. The San Antonio Grand Priz will be Labor Day
weekend. Hope to see you there!17
