Every year we plan for the trip to Santa Fe. This year we
were sure the plan would work, regardless of past perfor-
mance to the contrary. I guess I should explain, it is not
merely arriving in Santa Fe but, avoiding the dreaded
Deer Slayer award, that requires the intense planning. We
always get there, sooner or later.
Our usual modus operandi is to gather en mass and head
out. We were much more sophisticated this year. Two
groups would depart the pattern at different times. Thelr

trailer tugs would leave a day early accompanied by a
single 914 as a "scout ship". The Manskey Targa Tug
would meet us in Wichita Falls at precisely 11:00, plus or
minus an hour.
Unfortunately, the elements were against us, in the form
of a head wind. (Although sometimes it was a side wind,
but never a tail wind.) The wind had several effects, all un-
pleasant. The cavernous trailer housing "Big Orange"
proved to be as good a sail, as trailer. The Moncus and
Manskey machines had car covers. Ann and Les lost their
cover to the wind. Bob was able to keep his cover on but,
the flapping of the cover did produce a particularly inter-
esting buff job.
We didn't have to worry about Bob's flapping cover for
long. The flapping ceased to be a problem near Clyde,
Tx. The technical explanation was that the diesel Targa
