“Drugging the Public"
Health Talk No. 12
BY JNO. C. SILL1MAN, A. a, M. D.
When in a strange land the traveler
is accosted by* one ' over-solicitous
■with regard to his personal comfort
and well-being, thfe best course of pro-
cedure is to leave this engaging
- “friend" severely alone. With the
patent jnedicine bottle the same ad-
vice will hold true, and no matter
how “harmless” his front or how at-
tractive his talk, the best and only
sale way is to give him a wide berth
as his character is an unknown quan-
tity. In one instance in fifty the prof-
fered services may do good, but in
.the remaining forty-nine no good will
come of dallying with strangers, while
„• every once and again the foolish un-
. fortunate will be sand-bagged and’ rob-
«bed or suffer worse at the hands of
the confidential and newly ipet ac-
quaintance. There are many hun-
dreds of babies that have been unim
- tent^onally killed outright by harm-
less “soothing syrups,” “baby’s friend”
and the like, and the slaughter is go-
ing on annually and daily, i

makes the reader pause as he reads
.of one after another little life snuffed
out from the use of “soothers.”
Though all these preparations were
“harmless” prior to the Food and
Drug Act of 1906, it developed after
the law (requiring certain powerful
poisons as opium and its products to
be stated on the label), that most if
not all of these preparations contain-
ed some narcotic poison. One of the
most widely known of the soothing
syrups on the market thereafter made
no effort to conceal this' but now has
the matter that morphine is its “sooth-
ing” agent plainly indicated on the
label. “Headache powders” are al-
most invariably dangerous, for the
aimple reason that only dangerous
drugs will produce the freedom from
pain; that forms the basis of their
sale, f have in my hand a list of
twenty-three deaths due to “headache
powders” taken by people without _^a
physician's prescription and all from
the singlf drug, Acetanylid. These
cases were investigated by an agent
of “Colliers” and have been published
.with names and addresses.” Most of
