In 1917, Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels queried why a yeoman
couldn't be a woman. Soon thereafter women were enlisted as yeomen,
master-at-arns, and mess attendants. Most were assigned clerical duties,
some worked as draftsmen and on munitions, but none were permitted to
serve at sea. Pictured are Yeomen (F) riding a Navy tug at Puget Sound.February
